Summary

The Crew Systems and Aviation Operations Branch within our Research Directorate is seeking an individual to serve as a Senior Computer Engineer/Research Lab Manager with expertise in the areas of lab operations, hardware and software management, and support of researchers conducting research into aspects of air traffic management, crew/vehicle interfaces, and human/automation integration to support the development of new solutions for airspace operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as technical Manager for all aspects of the Air Traffic Operations Laboratory (ATOL) operations.
  • Develops or directs the development of information technology (IT) applications involving state-of-the-art development tools and computing systems in areas that may be controversial and precedent-setting in nature, to meet mission requirements.
  • Serves as a data systems technical specialist in the test, checkout, and readiness of flight, ground, data systems, or equipment that involves new concepts and new and varied requirement problems.
  • Acts as an engineering technical specialist on the procedures, methods, and techniques.
  • Participates in strategic planning for lab capabilities and roles.
  • Performs data acquisition, reduction, and computation to meet system needs. Uses standard, unconventional, or original approaches to design, develop, and modify science data processing systems and applications.
  • Provides oversight for contract support activities.
  • Provides oversight and ensures that regular laboratory maintenance is performed, responsible for developing the plan to conduct system administration and maintenance.
  • Works with team members to ensure the development of software and technical documents are on time.

  • Identifies, initiates, and facilitates the transfer of federally owned or originated technology.
  • Conducts laboratory tours and demonstrations and manages the development, planning, and utilization of resources for the laboratory.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience at the GS-13 level includes: Experience managing large integrated PC based hardware systems to include all aspects of IT support required to operate a large laboratory; and experience with the integration of diverse IT assets into existing systems of systems, such as a laboratory environment that blends both research and production aspects.

Specialized experience at the GS-14 level includes: Experience managing large integrated PC based hardware systems to include all aspects of IT support required to operate a large laboratory; experience with the integration of diverse IT assets into existing systems of systems, such as a laboratory environment that blends both research and production aspects; and experience serving as both a leader and as a Technical Manager for all aspects of a large distributed asset computational laboratory.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
