Responsibilities

  • Plans, evaluates, and supports highly complex suite of flight missions and broad portfolio of scientific research activities for the Astrophysics Division (APD) and manages an annual budget of 1.2 billion dollars.
  • Develops detailed plans, including schedule and resource requirements, for the accomplishment of division objectives, and presents these to the Director APD, Associate Administrator of the Science Mission Directorate, and other appropriate officials.
  • Oversees program implementation of engineering development and certification of flight hardware, on-orbit certification of spacecraft systems, and development of systems to acquire scientific data.
  • Leads the division and provides oversight for staff that manages complex programs comprised the Physics of the Cosmos, Cosmic Origins, Exoplanet Exploration, Astrophysics Strategic Missions, Astrophysics Explorers, and Astrophysics Research Programs.
  • Provides oversight, policy development, program formulation and management, program requirements and objectives, budget formulation and execution, long-term investment strategies, resource allocation, and
    program performance assessment.

To qualify, candidates must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/managerial experience, normally with several years at the GS-15 level or equivalent, which demonstrates clearly the ability to manage people and resources. SES Technical Qualification Questions

1. Skill in the strategic formulation and development of space flight programs in complex environments, involving multiple international, commercial, governmental and community collaborators and stakeholders. Provide examples of how you have met this requirement.

2. Experience executing end-to-end space flight mission development including design, program/project management and oversight. Provide examples of how you have met this requirement.

3. Demonstrated experience providing day-to-day leadership and organizational management of teams in a fast paced and dynamic environment. Provide examples of how you have met this requirement.

Education

Candidates must possess an engineering degree, preferably an advanced degree from an accredited engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university in a closely related engineering discipline

NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) leads the nation on a great journey of discovery, seeking new knowledge and understanding of our planet Earth, our Sun and solar system, and the universe out to its farthest reaches and back to its earliest moments of existence. The incumbent serves as Deputy Director of the Astrophysics Division (APD) and reports directly to the Director, APD. The Astrophysics Division conducts basic research and implements flight missions to investigate the origin and nature of planets, stars, galaxies and the large scale structure of the Universe and to search for habitable planets around other stars.
