Business Unit Description

Policy Research and International Affairs (PRI) serves AARP by leading the development and articulation of AARP's public policies, research and insights on the 50+ and issues that matter to them, importing best global practices, and strengthening AARP's reputation for world class expertise and thought leadership.

Summary

The Data and Research Intern will assist the Public Policy Institute (PPI) Health Team with research and data activities, as well as PPI convenings. The individual will also help maintain and develop one of AARP's unique data tools (AARP DataExplorer).

Responsibilities
  1. As a Health Team Intern, the individual will be given administrative rights to assist with updating, and performing quality assurance activities for an existing data/interactive webpage, AARP DataExplorer, and serve as part of the team that helps maintain the integrity of the AARP DataExplorer website. Activities include:
  1. Checking website links to make sure they are functioning, updating website landing pages with new content (reports, blogs, infographics, links), uploading new "data in brief" links, and other administrative functions related to DataExplorer (training will be provided).
  2. Intern will also work with the DataExplorer program manager to assist with trouble-shooting, tracking and managing content development, and uploading data, as appropriate. Requires using a project management tool, Trello (training will be provided).

Responsibilities also include:
  1. Being part of the PPI Health Team and supporting data and research activities, as needed, and assisting with Health Team convenings. These include:
  1. Assisting on projects such as, identifying data, creating or updating excel spreadsheets, conducting literature review, assisting with the publication process such as writing summaries or headlines for web-postings, social media, and other related activities;
  2. Assisting Health Team members organize convenings. Activities includes assisting with PowerPoint presentations, as well as other activities relevant to the process of agenda setting, expert panelist selections, planning and logistics.
  3. Assisting Health Team with written products such as papers and blogs, including data gathering, creating graphics, fact-checking, adding/checking hyperlinks, and other relevant activities.
  4. Other activities as needed for the Health Team.


Requirements

Prospective intern must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors.

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.

This internship requires someone with a high degree of comfort working with data. Training will be provided, as appropriate, but individual must have experience using Excel. Experience using other data software would be preferred but not necessary.

In addition, the position requires someone who is comfortable working with and updating websites. Training will be provided to learn platform-specific applications and job-specific requirements; as such, the candidate must be adaptive to learning and applying new skills.

The successful candidate is very organized, focuses on details (very important skill set for this position), able to juggle multiple projects, able to work in teams but also function independently, and able to meet deadlines. Candidates with project management experience is preferred.

The candidates should have familiarity with all programs in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Strong writing skill is necessary for this position so candidates will be asked to demonstrate writing competency.
