** Please note: The incumbent in this position will primarily be assigned to the supervision of the histology section of the Laboratory. Histology background and certification is strongly preferred. Job Summary The Section Chief is responsible for maintaining the technical basis and guideline for all phases of the laboratory section to which assigned. The Section Chief oversees all work that is performed within the section by evaluating the quality of work performance with regard to conformance to quality standards, policies and procedures as well as evaluating the workload volume and scheduling to determine and ensure the most effective, efficient and productive use of laboratory staff and facilities in that section. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology , Chemical Science or Biology from an accredited institution OR A passing score in the US Public Health Service proficient examination for Clinical Laboratory Technologists. Minimum of five (5) years of progressively more responsible experience in a licensed clinical laboratory under the supervision of a clinically board-certified pathologist. A MT(ASCP) or equivalent certificate from a national agency in the field of laboratory medicine (ie MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), NRCC(CC), CLT(HHS), CLS(NCA),etc.), with the exception of those who will be responsible for supervising non-technical staff only. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. Performs a wide variety of routine and special procedures following prescribed protocol and using manual or automated methods; calculates and reports results as established; consults with pathologist regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings. Troubleshoots technical and service problems pertaining to collection of the specimen, laboratory data, instrumentation and results reporting. Monitors and reviews daily quality control (QC) and performance improvement (PI) data to confirm that tolerance limits are not exceeded. Investigates QC/PI problems and implements corrective actions. Performs CAP surveys and evaluates survey results; investigates survey failures and recommends corrective action. Consults with the Medical Director as needed. Trains new employees and students in new procedures; evaluates and documents performance. Monitors, maintains and oversees laboratory equipment and supplies in assigned area(s) of responsibility. Assures that preventive and corrective maintenance is performed and documented. Participates in selection and assessment of equipment. Annually submits items for budget consideration. Performs special projects and method validation for new instruments and procedures. Develops, updates, and reviews technical procedures as required to meet regulatory requirements. Provides leadership and technical information to laboratory associates, including education and disciplinary documentation and conversations. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams; participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
