Anticipated completion in 2020. The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 62,000 pilots at 33 US and Canadian airlines) seeks a Senior Paralegal for our Washington, DC, office. The Senior Paralegal assists and supports the Legal Department attorneys in all areas of practice and provides administrative support to the Director, as assigned. S/he independently prioritizes and carries out assignments, resolves problems, and coordinates activities with attorneys and staff, actively listening, building trust, and adapting his/her style and approach to be effective. S/he uses considerable judgment and anticipates the needs of the attorneys and/or the Association. The Sr. Paralegal is also responsible for: Case management procedures for court, correspondence, and related case files; and, preparing summaries or abstracts of cases. Assisting in the preparation of various pleadings, correspondence, and memoranda. Assisting with legal and factual research, under the direction of attorneys. Assisting with all aspects of deposition, oral argument, and trial preparation. Cite-checking, editing, and proofreading court filings, arbitration briefs, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforcement briefs, legal memoranda, and correspondence. Assisting attorneys in document collection and review for discovery and case preparation. Performing due diligence and registration renewal tasks for the Association's charitable organizations. Performing administrative duties, as required, which occasionally includes answering the phones. Local, national, and international travel: 5 - 10%. Minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.Minimum Requirements: High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree in relevant area (eg, Paralegal Studies, Political Science, Pre-Law, English, or related fields) from an accredited college or university preferred; or, the equivalent combination of education and experience. Paralegal certificate strongly preferred. Minimum five (5) years of paralegal experience required, ten (10) years strongly preferred. Litigation support experience strongly preferred. Excellent working knowledge of Westlaw, PACER, and CM/ECF procedures. Experience with document collection and review software preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, external contacts, and pilots. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to work independently and to proactively identify and respond to issues and problems. Software: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.). While on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs. (Assistance may not always be available.)
