The Office of General Counsel strives to actively and effectively represent the Association and its affiliates' legal interests and to facilitate the efforts of staff and volunteers in fulfilling AARP's mission. We provides legal guidance to the AARP Board of Directors and its committees and staff, the AARP Foundation Board of Directors and staff, AARP Services Board of Directors and staff, and the trustees of the AARP Group Health Insurance Program.

Summary

The Senior Associate General Counsel (SVP level) heads the Intellectual Property and Real Estate group and represents AARP in high-level transactions involving IP, ensuring AARP's legal interests are preserved in business transactions, as well as negotiating other contracts and working on a variety of complex and sensitive matters s, which involve AARP's IP and Real Estate. Works closely with the EVP and General Counsel.

Responsibilities
  • Heads the Intellectual Property & Real Estate group, supervising lawyers and paraprofessionals responsible for intellectual property matters and legal matters related to Real Estate and content channels (including ATM, Bulletin, AARP.org, AARP NOW, AARP YouTube) and multimedia;, commercial and mission related transactions, as well as a variety of non-IP work.
  • Negotiates and drafts agreements for IP transactions, content licensing and acquisition and distribution, sponsorships, promotions, sweepstakes and contents, digital advertising. Proactively identifies and mitigates legal risk to protect AARP from undue legal exposure while providing a strategic legal perspective in to further AARP's goals in negotiations.
  • Advises on evolving digital technologies and communications channels such as apps and social media.
  • Reviews radio and online content to minimize legal risk (copyright infringement, trademark issues and right of publicity) and ensure substantive accuracy. Ensures compliance with all federal and state laws, including IRS, FTC Act, and the FCC.
  • Exhibits AARP values at all times.


Requirements
  • J.D. degree plus a minimum of 15 years directly related specialized experience in the areas of intellectual property, commercial transactions and negotiations, business affairs. Experience with nonprofit law a plus.
  • Must be, or be able to become, a member in good standing with the District of Columbia bar.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Comfortable public speaker with ability to make formal presentations to management, to think on one's feet and clearly express arguments and ideas in meetings.
  • Highly analytical, able to analyze complex issues and see the crux of the issue through all the swirl around it. Able to hold his/her own ground in the face of pressure.
  • Strong negotiator.
  • Ability to function independently with limited guidance.
  • Previous experience managing staff strongly desired.
  • Must function with the highest degree of integrity and ethical standards. Passion for our nonprofit mission a definite positive.
  • Ability to handle multiple, high-level complex projects at one time and high volumes of work on an ongoing basis, with strong attention to detail.
  • Must be customer-oriented, approachable, responsive, and engaging. Sense of humor a plus!
