Assistant Professor, Forensic Biology Analysis

The George Mason University, Forensic Science Program in the College of Science, invites applications for our Assistant Professor of Forensic Biology Analysis position. This full-time, term faculty position is scheduled to begin in August 2019. Duties: The selected candidate will teach undergraduate, graduate, and lab courses in Forensic Science/ DNA analysis, assist in advising students in the department's undergraduate and graduate programs, supervise graduate and undergraduate student research, and actively participate in the continuous development of forensic science research at Mason. The typical teaching load is 4 courses per semester. The incumbent will also be expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized and externally funded research program in the area of forensic biology with a specific focus on establishing trans-disciplinary collaboration in research and application to the field of forensic science.

Required Qualifications: * Completion of an M.S., M.F.S., or PhD degree in a physical or life sciences prior to the first day of the appointment; * Successful completion of college course work in: Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Statistics/ Population Genetics; * Experience performing instrument maintenance and set-up, preparation and validation of reagents, controls and calibrators, reporting of test results, etc.; * Significant operational/applied experience working in the field of forensic science, either in a forensic laboratory setting, or in the field; * Evidence handling experience; * Significant experience performing forensic DNA analysis; * Experience with GeneMapper ID and/or GeneMapper ID-X software platforms; * The ability to make sound scientific decisions with regard to DNA test interpretation; * Strong written and verbal communication skills; and * Self-motivated, detail oriented and the ability to work well in a team laboratory environment.
Preferred Qualifications * Prior work in Forensic DNA Lab as a forensic analyst/Lab Manager * Knowledge and experience in: ethics and professional values; courtroom testimony; logic; principles and concepts of forensic science applications; research methodology and statistical analysis; proper methods to discard chemicals and biological materials; experience with laboratory accreditation, safety program administration; knowledge of laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control principles; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and a high level of integrity; grant writing; and participation in forensic DNA research/analysis.

Our full time and adjunct faculty members have operational Forensic Science field experience and the program consists of nearly 300 undergraduate students, 100 graduate students, and two graduate assistants.
