"Assistant Professor, Environmental Social Science (Tenure-Track)

The George Mason University, Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) in the College of Science is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for a full-time 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Social Science beginning in August 2019. Responsibilities: The incumbent will complement existing departmental disciplines including ecology, conservation biology, sociology, geography, political science, and economics. The selected finalist will contribute to George Mason University's commitment to interdisciplinary research within the department and College of Science, and between other colleges. Standard service activities within the ESP and the College of Science are expected. The expected teaching responsibility for this position will follow the College's standard workload guidelines and will include teaching courses such as Introduction to Environmental Social Science, Human Dimensions of the Environment, and Global Biodiversity/Environmental Governance.

As a unit which promotes trans-disciplinary scholarship, we seek a colleague with research and teaching interests that complement existing faculty strengths in subject areas including terrestrial wildlife and natural resources, conservation biology and biodiversity governance. Preference will be given to candidates who express an interest in expanding collaborative opportunities such as the growing partnership between ESP and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation, collaborative work in the Institute for a Sustainable Earth (ISE), the department's own thrust in conservation and sustainability, and building new partnerships to develop interdisciplinary projects.

Required Qualifications: * Successful completion of a Ph.D. in environmental social science, public administration, sociology, cultural geography, public policy or related field prior to the first day of the appointment; * Demonstrated expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative social science methods; * A demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary education; * An established record of scholarly activity demonstrated by publication record in peer-reviewed journals; * Demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program; * Commitment and interest in teaching lecture courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels; * Strong commitment to mentoring and supervising graduate students; * Effective interpersonal communication skills; and * The ability to collaborate with other natural scientists and social scientists in research, teaching and outreach.
Preferred Qualifications: * Post-doctoral experience in environmental social science, biodiversity governance, or public policy; * Demonstrated experience in developing successful externally-funded research collaborations; * A record of seeking and securing extramural research support evidenced by proposal submission and/or recipient of funding awards; and * Demonstrated successful teamwork in a collaborative environment.

ESP includes graduate program faculty from across the university and numerous affiliated environmental professionals and awards the following degrees: B.S. in Environmental Science, B.A. in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Public Policy. The Department also partners with the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation in Front Royal, VA, to offer graduate level courses in biodiversity and conservation.
