The Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University invites applications for a Professor in the field of Legal Studies (including Constitutional Law, Public Law, Judicial Process, Law and Society, Comparative Legal Studies, and related fields) to begin in Fall 2019. This search is open with respect to rank as we seek to hire either an established scholar with an excellent record of research or an emerging scholar with high potential. The Schar School has over 80 faculty members with backgrounds in political science, public policy, computer science, anthropology, economics, and engineering. The School houses three Ph.D. programs, 13 Master's degree programs, and two undergraduate degree programs. The School is housed on two campuses in Fairfax and Arlington, Virginia both of which are located within the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It has unmatched geographical access to federal agencies, national laboratories, and non-governmental organizations, as well as one of the largest concentrations of high-tech firms in the nation. The D.C. metropolitan area is also consistently rated among the best places to live in the United States. The Schar School receives over $3 million in annual research funding, and is the beneficiary of a generous naming gift from the philanthropist Dwight Schar. Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) by the position's start date. (Candidates with a JD and an exceptional record of scholarship also will be considered.) Preferred Qualifications: We prefer candidates whose research is both impactful within a sub-discipline, and also addresses substantive issues of broad contemporary concern. Such issues might include, but are by no means restricted to, civil rights, immigration, or gender. The successful candidate should have a strong commitment to research and teaching; s/he will advise students, participate in all aspects of the school's mission, and serve the profession.
