Term Assistant Professor/Instructor of Arabic

The George Mason University Department of Modern and Classical Languages invites applications for one full-time, nontenure-track Term Assistant Professor/Instructor position in Arabic beginning August 25, 2016. The full-time contract is for one year, with possibility of renewal contingent on satisfactory performance and departmental and program needs. Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities include 12 credits per semester in the Arabic language at the undergraduate level. The ideal candidate will teach Modern Standard Arabic at all levels, upper-level conversation, media Arabic and Arabic literature (in Arabic).

Qualifications: * Ph.D. or A.B.D. (all but dissertation) in a field relevant to the study of the Arab world; * Significant experience teaching Arabic at the undergraduate level; * Native or near-native proficiency in Arabic and English is required; * Cultural and linguistic expertise across two or more regions of the Arabic-speaking world preferable; and * Familiarity with the latest instructional technologies and commitment to undergraduate education are expected.

The department offers a major and a minor in many languages, including a minor in Arabic. Beginning in Fall 2016, students may also major in Arabic. The Arabic Program is actively engaged with other units of the university, especially Islamic Studies and Middle Eastern Studies.
