Health Educator/Program Assistant (Part-Time) - Georgetown University's Health Education Services

Georgetown University's Health Education Services (HES) strives to create a healthy environment in which students can excel and thrive, arming them with the tools needed to lead healthy lifestyles. HES provides these services in context of a Catholic and Jesuit university, with particular attention to the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis (care of the whole person).

Health Education Services is accepting applications for a current graduate student to fill a year-long, part-time Health Educator/Program Assistant position. The role will be approximately 20 hours per week through May 2020 and can be used to fulfill internship or practicum credit. The Health Educator/Program Assistant will work closely with professionals in HES and other on-campus offices to create wellness programs and health promotion campaigns for Georgetown students. This is an excellent opportunity to gain health education and office management experience.

In addition to health promotion programming, Health Education Services also provides consultation services (assessment, treatment, and referrals) for students struggling with the following issues: alcohol and other drug use, stress management, sexual assault and relationship violence, and nutrition and eating disorders. Although this position is not a confidential and/or clinical role, the incumbent will provide administrative and programmatic support to clinicians and other full-time staff within the office.

Program Responsibilities (60%)

Social Norms Campaign
  • Develop health communication materials for Georgetown University's social norms program, which promotes alcohol risk reduction for the undergraduate community.
  • Write content for monthly 11"x17" posters on a variety of health topics
  • Work with graphic design consultant to develop visual images for campaign.
  • Oversee student employees who engage in the monthly distribution of posters

New Student Orientation
  • Collaborate with a Creative Team and Center for Student Engagement to develop Student New Orientation health promotion play and other programming.

Health promotion programming - Coordinate on-going campus wellness programs and assist staff with trainings, events, and campaigns. Responsibilities include needs assessment of topics relevant to student life and development, creation of behavioral/educational objectives, oversight of program logistics, and campaign monitoring/evaluation. Programs include, but are not limited to:
  • Administrative support, research, and assessment for well-being initiatives
  • Support for mandatory trainings and education around gender-based violence and bystander intervention
  • Trainings for student leaders and staff members about Health Education Services and programs

  • Develop health communications materials, office promotional materials/brochures, and additional marketing as needed.
  • Manage an updated web presence for Health Education Services (WordPress training will be provided)

Social media
  • Create images using the Canva online platform; develop written content for health promotion and event marketing. Schedule posts on Facebook/ Instagram accounts.

Additional projects and duties as assigned

Office/Administrative Responsibilities (40%)

Office management
  • Serve as primary contact for visitors/appointments to HES
  • Assist with interviewing, training, scheduling, and overseeing student employees
  • Maintain organization of HES office, including ordering supplies
  • Other day-to-day office duties and related tasks as assigned

Financial management
  • Monitor budget for relevant programs
  • Oversee credit card reconciliation and receipts/record-keeping processes

  • Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Education, Global Health, Communications, Healthcare Administration, or a related field. A bachelor's degree in health education, health promotion, health studies, or a related field is preferred
  • Experience in development, implementation, and assessment of health promotion programs and/or health communication materials required (preferably on-campus or school-based)
  • Engaging self-starter with experience in mentoring and leadership
  • Sensitivity to working in a clinician-based office that requires confidentiality and compassion
  • Ability to create relevant, engaging programming and material based on best practices/research
  • High level of organizational and administrative skills required
  • Good written, oral, verbal communication skills are essential
  • Team player willing to work collaboratively within the office and with off-campus partners
  • Ability to work independently and meet project deadlines
  • Attention to detail is essential
