Requirements

The Research Specialist serves as an active member of a team of tissue biobanking procurement specialists at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (Lombardi). S/he will be responsible for activities related to the "Georgetown University Biobank and Clinical Database", a study at Lombardi that is sponsored by Indivumed, an integrated oncology company founded in 2002 in Hamburg, Germany. This collaboration is designed to create a system wide infrastructure to collect and preserve fully annotated biospecimen from cancer patients for the purposes of biobanking and subsequent research. The Research Specialist has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Reviews schedules to determine patient eligibility, obtaining informed consent on all eligible and interested patients.
  • Conducts participant interviews and follows up to collect clinical and epidemiologic data to complete sample annotation.
  • Collects a comprehensive set of biological specimens (tissue, blood, urine) and completes annotation with clinical data by administering a study related questionnaire to participants and reviewing their EMR.
  • Assists the clinical team/care providers including but not limited to: surgeons, physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, medical students, and the pathology team.
  • Walks very quickly in order to transport biospecimen between the OR and the pathology suite in order to accomplish the project objective of storing tissue in less than 15-30 minutes after resection.
  • Fully documents all procedures and conducts routine quality assurance checks in accordance with Georgetown University Medical Center's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience in a clinical and/or research setting
  • Experience in contact with patients and physicians, experience in oncology, clinical research and/or surgery
  • Ability to review patients medical chart and analyze the information to be entered in the patient interview form
  • Ability to stand while waiting for acquisition of specimens at operating room and walking long distances for material transportation and to meet with participants
  • Comfort interviewing patients for the collection of clinical data
  • Organized, punctual, and detailed oriented with the ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of a secondary language is not required, but would be welcomed
