University of Maryland University College seeks an Accounting Manager. The Accounting Manager position reports to the Deputy Comptroller and manages staff accountants while ensuring the appropriate recordation of financial and operational transactions. This hands-on position will need to be an experienced manager as well a skilled accountant to assist in developing staff as well as reviewing and improving financial processes as necessary. The duties will include an active role in financial areas to include fixed assets, financial reporting, account reconciliation and general accounting processes.

The following duties are typically expected of this position but should not be considered as all-inclusive:
  • Prepare, review and approve journal entries to record accurate financial transactions in a timely manner.
  • Prepare, review and approve monthly account reconciliations; research and resolved identified discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate monthly general ledger close process to ensure all entries are posted, financial system updated and financial activities are reviewed for unexpected variances.
  • Assist with annual financial statement preparation and audit to include supplemental journal entries, supporting schedules, variance analysis and auditor inquiries.
  • Ensuring capital and inventoried asset activity is completed in accordance with policy, to include reviewing monthly reconciliations, recording of fixed asset and equipment activity, and verification of asset status.
  • Perform and support tuition remission related activities involving communication with students and recordation and reconciliation of tuition-related financial transactions.
  • Recruit, develop and manage staff to form a high-functioning, cohesive and motivated team to include performance reviews, establishing goals and assisting staff members in addressing challenges and skill deficits.
  • Support efficient process improvements by initiating and implementing approved changes to institutional policies and procedures to help ensure accurate and timely financial results.
  • Recommend changes to policies and procedures to better align with external regulatory agencies requirements to include USM, State of Maryland, and GAAP.
  • Perform necessary duties associated to specific roles assigned relating to financial ERP and state accounting systems.
  • Maintain appropriate skills and competencies in accounting, management and software applications through various on-site and off-site resources.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong leadership skills related to staff development and motivation.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, Financial Accounting Standards Board accounting standards, internal controls and financial analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems and make the appropriate recommendations for change.
  • Highly motivated, can work independently, handle multiple simultaneous projects, and prioritize workload as necessary to meet established deadlines.
  • Demonstrate skill to use financial information systems, ERP software (Workday) and other related software (Microsoft Excel)
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of faculty, staff, students, and administration.

  • Requires BA/BS degree in accounting, business administration or other related field
  • A minimum of seven years accounting-related experience with progressively increasing responsibilities
  • A minimum of five years of supervisory or management experience
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of higher education accounting and Workday Financial systems preferred.
