The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community and provides dedicated support to NCI's intramural Center for Cancer Research (CCR). The dedicated units provide expertise in electron microscopy, protein characterization, mass spectrometry, protein expression, optical microscopy and genomics. These research efforts are an integral part of CCR at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), where CRTP scientists work collaboratively with intramural NCI investigators to provide research technologies and expertise. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES The Center for Cancer Research dedicated mass spectrometry laboratory is looking for an experienced mass spectrometry specialist who will provide exceptional scientific and technical expertise in proteomics and protein analysis with great emphasis on data processing and analysis. This position requires an individual with outstanding technical skills and scientific experience as well as excellent communication and collaborative skills. The candidate must be able to work on multiple projects, within a fast-paced interdisciplinary team of chemists, biochemists and cell and molecular biologists. Analyze samples for CCR investigator and communicate with them regarding experimental set up and data interpretation. Key roles: Analyze samples for CCR investigator and communicate with them regarding experimental set up and data interpretation. Develop and conduct complex sample processing methods for protein and proteomics analysis. Operate and maintain state-of-the-art LC-MS instruments with special emphasis on orbitraps, trouble shooting, QC and standardization for proteomics workflow. Develop liquid chromatographic methods for nano flow HLPC coupled to mass spectrometers and trouble shoot liquid chromatographic problems. Use both existing and develop new methods to study post-translational modifications on proteins, develop new raw data analytical methods for post-translational modifications and other challenging problems associated with protein analysis using mass spectrometery. Perform variety of raw mass spectrometry data processing using Proteome Discoverer and any open source and propitiatory software, pertaining to extracting information from mass spectrometry data. Summarize and present results as needed and contribute and write manuscripts for per review publications BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Possession of a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, analytical chemistry or other related discipline from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for US equivalency In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of related post-graduate experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Strong theoretical understanding of protein biochemistry and practical knowledge of analyzing proteins and post-translational modifications using mass spectrometry. Solid understanding of separation chemistry for proteins/peptides analysis with an experience of nano-flow HPLC/UPLC. Extensive experience in instrumentation, trouble shooting, QC, standardization for proteomics workflow. Experience using MS software suites for proteomics workflow analysis. Must be able to obtain and maintain a clearance. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preferential consideration will be given to candidates that demonstrate both an intimate knowledge of operating and performing proteomics experiments on Orbitrap Fusion, Q Exactive HF, Q Exactive and Velos Pro mass spectrometer, configured with nano ESI sources and linked to EASY-nLC systems. Some experience in performing and analysing global metabolomic experiments using high resolution mass spectrometer such as the Q Exactive. Expertise in using Proteome Discoverer and Compound Discoverer to analyze proteomics and metabolomics data is highly desirable. Programming and big data analysis skills are highly preferable. EXPECTED COMPETENCIES: Operating Orbitrap mass spectrometry Liquid chromatography separation Raw mass spectrometry data analysis Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE) | Minority/Female/Disabled/Veteran (M/F/D/V) | Drug Free Workplace (DFW)
