Minimum Qualifications :

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school and/or training program in basic carpentry and woodcrafting is required.

Considerable knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a carpenter or related craftsman for a period of not less than two (2) year.

License:

Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence. Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past (3) years.

Medical Group:

Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this class.

Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.

Ability to distinguish basic colors for work place safety.

Job Summary/Duties :

This is highly skilled carpentry and woodcraft work of a complex nature. Employee is responsible for performing construction, alteration, renovation, repair, modification and fabrication of WMATA facilities. Employee is responsible for working with wood and wood substitutes for framework, rafters, doors, paneling, interior and exterior trim, staircases, beams and other high grade wooden items where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important.

Employees are assigned elementary carpentry and woodcrafting work in WMATA facilities. Employees are expected to gain familiarity with and to develop skills for carpentry and woodcrafting. Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. Work is reviewed and verified upon completion to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements by a Supervisor, Craft Crew.

Performs complex carpentry and related work in construction, renovation, alteration, repair or modification of structural work. Performs tasks involved in the fabrication and repair of highgrade wooden items such as cabinetry, commercial and industrial furniture, graphic displays, paneling, design models and prototypes.

Works from complex plans, blueprints and sketches.

Utilizes rulers, tapes, squares, planes, powered saws/planes/routers, miter box and other power and hand tools.

Utilizes shop mathematics in planning and completing projects requiring the use of arcs, tangents and circles.

Performs laminating, fine surfacing, plastic overlaying, steam bending and grain matching.

Makes templates and patterns, selects appropriate machine tools and materials.

Applies decorative finishes to wooden items. Develops curves, contours and shaped surfaces and features such as inlays, friezes, matched contours and complex joints.

Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.

Attends on-the-job and formal training classes; assists co-workers in higher level positions in their assignments or provides job specific training to co-workers in lower classifications.

Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies or incidents such as emergency snow removal.

Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.

May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.

Work variable shifts, days and nights as required and as provided under existing Union contract.

Performs all other related duties as required.
