The Manager of Pipeline Development and Special Projects is a new position at the Kennedy Center and will oversee the principal and major gifts prospective donor pipeline across multiple campaigns and teams. This position is an opportunity for an experienced front-line fundraiser to help drive strategy for a high-performing development team at a watershed moment for a world-renowned institution; The Kennedy Center is working on an ambitious capital campaign, looking toward its landmark 50 th anniversary and the 90 th anniversary of the National Symphony Orchestra, and laying the groundwork for the Center's next transformative fundraising effort.

Working closely with the Director of Development Strategy and Special Projects, the Manager of Development Pipeline and Special Projects will ensure the creation and continued vibrancy of a strong pipeline of prospective and current major donors in support of long term and annual campaigns. This position will manage and cultivate relationships with existing principal and major gift prospects as well as identify new prospective institutional, corporate, foundation and individual donors. The Manager will make direct, face-to-face solicitations with major prospective donors, assist the Board and other staff as necessary with solicitations, and develop complex proposals for individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Development Strategy and Special Projects and Vice President of Individual Campaigns to align principal gifts strategies, solicitations, and materials with organizational and Individual Campaigns Department priorities.
  • Partner with board members to execute and coordinate high-level activities and individual meetings across the country.
  • Oversee a robust moves management process to track prospects through the donor cycle of discovery, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Generate portfolio assignments for all principal gift portfolio holders.
  • Contribute to prospecting, qualification, solicitation and cultivation plans, in partnership with the newly created prospect research department.
  • Surface executive leadership and research engagement opportunities. Ensure opportunities are optimized through timely, quality preparation, and follow up.
  • Strategize, plan, and evaluate the principal gifts program; develop and report on qualitative and quantitative performance metrics.

The incumbent manages his/her time, resources, and work load to maximize productivity and financial results; exercises discretion; evaluates complex internal and external relationships; and regularly takes initiative to advance project objectives and goals. This position reports to the Director of Development Strategy and Special Projects and will work collaboratively with other development management and staff, as well as with senior staff and Board leadership.

Principle Functions:

30% Pipeline Management
  • Utilizing Tessitura, create and maintain a comprehensive major gift prospect pipeline consisting of current and new donors.
  • Monitor portfolio moves management process for Individual Campaigns, with an added level of guidance and support for the President and Board of Trustees.
  • Working closely with the Vice President of Individual Campaigns and Director of Development Strategy and Special Projects, assign prospects to Directors, Managers, the Senior Vice President of Development, the President, and Board of Trustees.
  • Coordinate and lead Prospect Assignment Meetings.
  • Work with the IT team to maintain database integrity and run pipeline reports.
  • Implement best practices in relation to pipeline creation and maintenance.
  • Provide strategic council to the President and Board of Trustees as to appropriate approach for each prospect.

30% Special Projects - Pipeline Development
  • Identify appropriate strategy and approach for prospects, and collaborate with front-line fundraisers to develop cultivation and solicitation briefing memos for the President and Trustees as needed.
  • Monitor and analyze wealth screening results to identify new prospects for gift pipeline and fundraiser portfolios.
  • Conduct detailed research on top prospects (new and existing) to determine appropriate capacity ratings and philanthropic inclination.

40% Portfolio Management - Principal Gifts
  • Manage a portfolio of principal gift prospects.
  • Prepare solicitation material for meetings, including briefings, talking points, proposals, pitch decks, and targeted follow up.

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Four to six years development or related experience required, with specific experience in all facets of individual giving
  • Experience managing a dynamic and highly competent team.
  • Experience with Tessitura is preferred.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required
  • Superior and professional organizational, prioritization, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills as well as computer literacy.
  • A clear understanding of the Kennedy Center mission, the performing arts, and a nuanced understanding of the ways to maximize fundraising potential within a large and complex institution.
  • Ability to foresee development needs, generate work for this position and for development staff members, anticipate the needs of superiors, and multitask efficiently.
  • Ability to deftly manage many relationships and personality types - both internal among staff members, and external among constituents.
  • Ability and confidence to work without close supervision.
