    In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Specialized Experience: Applicants must demonstrate one year of specialized experience in their resume equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service, GS-10. Specialized experience is defined as: Prepare engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates for engineering projects in a medical, dental, and industrial facilities, technical and research laboratories, and multistory office buildings; Receive engineering requests and determine what is needed to fulfill the intent of requests; Establish construction layouts, draft sketches, and drawings by computing tolerances, dimensions, clearances, fits, loads, sizes, and engineering design aspects; Compute and compile cost estimates of projects and scope of work to be performed or initially planned which may include materials, labor, and administrative overhead. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

    Specialized Experience for In-Service Placement Eligibles:
    One year of specialized experience which includes providing service or installation of medical and dental diagnostic imaging equipment such as: Assist in preparing engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates for engineering projects in a medical, dental, and industrial facilities, technical and research laboratories, and multistory office buildings; Receive and forward engineering requests and determine what is needed to fulfill the intent of requests; Establish construction layouts, draft sketches, and drawings by computing tolerances, dimensions, clearances, fits, loads, sizes, and engineering design aspects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

    Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:
    -Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.
    -Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.

    Education Substitution: Some positions allow applicants to substitute education for the required specialized experience. For this position, education substitution is not permitted and applicants must possess the required experience.

    Time in Grade Requirement for In-Service Eligibles: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).In-service Placement includes a noncompetitive action in which a position is filled with a current or former competitive service employee through promotion, reassignment, change to lower grade, transfer, reinstatement, reemployment, or restoration. In-service Placement also includes noncompetitive conversion of appointees whose Federal excepted positions are brought into the competitive service under title 5 CFR 316.702, and Department of Defense/Nonappropriated Fund (DOD/NAF) and Coast Guard NAF employees whose positions are brought into the competitive service.
