Salary $51,292.80 - $78,374.40 Annually Location Arlington, VA Job Type Full-Time Department Department of Environmental Services Job Number 2813-19A-DES-TT Closing Continuous Position Information Arlington County is currently seeking an experienced mechanic to repair and maintain the various fleet vehicles used by the county and its various departments. These vehicles include school buses, fire trucks and other fire apparatus, medic units, refuse trucks, and dump trucks, and other miscellaneous heavy equipment used by Arlington County. These mechanics are responsible for performing preventive maintenance work and routine corrective repairs on light, heavy, construction and/or emergency vehicles. Specific duties include: Inspecting vehicular equipment; Performing corrective and preventive maintenance; Troubleshooting and diagnosing repair work on mechanical, hydraulic, air conditioning, and air brake systems and electrical systems to include multiplex systems using diagnostic scanning tools; Determining scope and sequence of repairs required; Repairing or replacing tires for all types of equipment; Operating shop equipment and vehicles such as the tire machine, computerized tire balance, fork lift and wrecker; Providing repair feasibility recommendations on transmissions or related components; Training new mechanics; Assigning and reviewing work during the absence of the supervisor; Performing Virginia State Safety Inspections on vehicles; and Transporting vehicles and heavy equipment. Selection Criteria Minimum: Trainee Level : High school diploma or GED plus 18 months of auto mechanic experience performing preventive maintenance duties to include diagnosing, repairing or rebuilding gasoline or diesel engines, brake systems, manual or automatic transmissions, and differentials. Full Performance : High school diploma or GED plus three years of auto mechanic experience performing preventive maintenance duties to include diagnosing, repairing or rebuilding gasoline or diesel engines, brake systems, manual or automatic transmissions, and differentials. Additionally, must have: Virginia Safety Inspector License; and Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License and required endorsements (See special requirements). Substitution : Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with mechanical experience in one or more of the following: Repairing school buses, fire trucks and other fire apparatus, medic units, refuse trucks, and dump trucks; Performing computerized diagnostic testing to troubleshoot complex engine, mechanical, or electrical problems; Repairing diesel engines, transmissions, or hydraulic systems; Training other mechanics; Performing Virginia State safety inspections; and Possession of National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications. Special Requirements The applicant must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license from place of residence and authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Applicant must possess or obtain within specified time frames of appointment: Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License from the applicant's place of residence within the first six (6) months of employment; Hazardous materials endorsement (H), Tank vehicle endorsement (N), School Bus endorsement (S), and Passenger Carrying endorsement (P) for the CDL within the first nine (9) months of employment; VA State Safety Inspector License within the first twelve (12) months of employment. After obtaining CDL and required endorsements H, N, S and P, applicant must be willing to work on and operate the County-owned 2600 gallon fuel truck as requested by the Operations Supervisor. Applicants must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employers' information required by Department of Transportation (DOT) agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information. Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening and will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards and required background check. Applicants must be willing to maintain hand and diagnostic tools required by the trade, work in awkward or cramped positions for long periods of time, and work in an environment that includes exposure to noise, odors, dust, grease and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment. Must have ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds; carry up to 50 pounds unilaterally; carry up to 100 pounds bilaterally and push/pull up to 75 pounds unassisted; NOTE: Anyone hired without the VA State Certified Safety Inspector License, or the Commercial Driver's License and required endorsements will be appointed as a Trainee and must obtain the permit/license within the specified time frame. Once obtained, the CDL and VA State Certified Safety Inspector Licenses must be kept in good standing throughout the duration of the employment. Additional Information Work Hours: Typical work hours are from Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm The salary listed at the top of the announcement reflects the range for the full performance employee. The salary range for the trainee level is $46,841.60 to $71,572.80 annually. If a trainee is hired, depending on qualifications, a training period will be established to last no longer than the equivalent of one year. At the end of the training period, the employee must meet experience, training and proficiency requirements for the full-performance level position. The following benefits are available: Paid Leave : Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid holidays each year. Health and Dental Insurance : Three group health insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye care needs. Life Insurance : A group term policy of basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker status. Retirement : The County offers three vehicles to help you prepare for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also contributes to this plan. For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) . The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay period, in this plan. The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your base pay. Permanent, Part-Time Appointments: Part time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week. Limited Term Appointments: Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status. Temporary Regular Appointments: Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments: Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits.
