Veolia North America seeks a Director, Operations tolead and manage a major, multi-faceted district energy business (steam, hotwater and chilled water) in Baltimore, MD. District energy operations inBaltimore encompasses eight (8) steam, hot water or chilled water plants, over20 miles of distribution piping, and over 250 customers. In addition, Veoliaprovides Operations and Maintenance services to several large campuses in theBaltimore metropolitan area. The Director is responsible for the safe,reliable, and cost effective performance of day-to-day operations andmaintenance, including budget and staffing, as well as overseeing the successfulplanning and execution of capital projects, providing operations input onbusiness development opportunities, and developing and implementing the longrange strategic plans for Baltimore Operations. Candidate will be a valuablemember of the South Region management team. Responsibilities:- Oversee and manage a staff ofapproximately 50 operations, maintenance and support personnel, including thefollowing direct reports: Manager, Production (Heating); Manager, Production(Chilled Water); Manager, Distribution; Manager, Engineering; and Manager,Purchasing.- Develops and is responsible forthe O&M budget and long range business plan. Oversees and managesday-to-day operating expenses to support financial performance.- Responsible for planning and execution of capitalprojects to support existing operations and system expansion/ new customerinterconnections.- Oversees and manages compliancewith Veolia corporate policies, and, where appropriate, sets and manages localpolicies and procedures, to support safe and efficient operation of thebusiness.- Responsible for compliance withlocal, state and federal environmental laws and OSHA regulations.- Initiates and maintains closeworking relationships with appropriate permitting agencies, regulatoryagencies, vendors, A&E community, legal community, construction industry,and other sectors of the community as appropriate and needed.- Responsible for technical review and feasibility assessmentof customer contracts during renewal and new business negotiations.- Provide leadership and inspiration to theOperations department in support of Veolia's goal of being a best-in-classoperator, customer-focused service provider, strong environmental steward andvalued member of the community.- BS degree or higher, preferably in Mechanical orElectrical Engineering. PE qualification desired, but not required.- At minimum of 10 years' experience with plantoperations and/or engineering support. May include district energy systems,stationary or marine power plants, cogeneration facility operations or otherthermal energy based operations.- Strong working knowledge, both theoretical andhands-on experience, of thermal energysystems, engine operations and repair and piping distribution systems.- Minimum 5 years' supervisory and managementexperience in responsible position involving planning, budgeting, andexecution.- Minimum 5 years' experience in increasingly responsiblepositions involving procurement practices involving planning, scope of workdevelopment, vendor selection, conducting pre and post bid meetings, contractaward and contract administration.- Thorough understanding of the principles ofpersonnel management including: interviewing, staffing, employee motivation,training and performance appraisals.- Experience in marketing and business developmentincluding initial client contacts, proposal development and contract closure.- Demonstrated proficiency in the computer softwareincluding financial spreadsheets, word processing and database managementprograms, project scheduling programs. Knowledge of and experience with CMMSprograms (such as Maximo), and AutoCAD.
