Job Title: Communications DirectorReports to: Deputy DirectorFLSA Status: ExemptDepartment: CommunicationsLocation: Arlington, VADivision: N/A Duties and Responsibilities Collaborate with the staff and Executive Director to lead the development of internal and external communications strategies (traditional, digital, and social) that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen impact. Promote, enhance, and protect the organization's brand and reputation. Increase awareness of, and affinity for, the USNSCC's programs and brand identity across key stakeholder audiencesRecommend short- and long-term communications-related goals to the Executive Director and assist in conveying these objectives to the Board of Directors. Manage development, distribution and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to the Sea Cadet Skim, brochures, annual report, e-newsletters, the USNSCC's website, and internal communications tools (Workplace). Coordinate website maintenance ensuring that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularlyServe as Editor-in-Chief of the USNSCC's magazine Sea Cadet QuarterlyConceptualize, write, and/or edit stories, message points, press releases, positioning papers, and calls-to-action promoting the USNSCC's programs and brand identityCollaborating with the fundraising lead, develop campaigns and manage messaging to a wide audience to foster donor supportCollaborating with the marketing lead, develop recruiting campaigns to foster membership growth . Develop and nurture relationships with media outlets, and oversee organizational response to press and stakeholder inquiriesPrepare talking points, speeches, and presentations for senior managementMentor and lead a team member responsible for USNSCC's social media presence Skills:Interpersonal Skills Willingness to collaborate Oral Communication Skills Adobe Creative SuiteWritten Communication Skills Microsoft Office SuiteEducation/Experience: - Bachelor's Degree required - Five years' experience in a communications role, preferably in a non-profit setting - Innovative thinker with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output - Success in a variety of print and online media formats, with insight on how new media technologies can be best used to reach our target adolescent audience, their parents, our volunteers, and potential donors - Experience in workflow management process improvement and implementation - Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters - Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and building relationships and implementing new initiatives - High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
