CLIA develops young people to become leaders by connecting them to opportunities to amplify their voices, cultivate their skills, and actively participate in the process of positive community change. In Baltimore, youth are often dismissed as part of the problem and rarely valued as part of the solution. CLIA believes that young people have tremendous potential when provided with the right opportunities. CLIA has two objectives: to develop young people to be leaders and advocates and to advance positive community change through public policy. Through our Leadership Development and Advocacy training programs, we teach students to apply fact-based advocacy skills to solve issues they face, we connect them with key professionals and public officials, and we provide youth with real life work experience and guidance that compliments their goals and passions. CLIA also works to change policy. Currently, we're training young people who have been directly impacted by the justice system as spokespeople and community organizers to change the current law allowing youth to be automatically charged as adults in Maryland, and to promote broader youth justice efforts.The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. The primary duties of the Executive Director include leading operations, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors, manages a staff of up to eight total, and oversees an annual budget of approximately $750,000.The ideal candidate will possess:* Knowledge of issues affecting youth in Baltimore, including youth engaged in the criminal justice and juvenile justice systems* A deep commitment to recognizing youth leadership ability, amplifying their voices, and teaching them to engage in broad systems change* Demonstrated leadership, management, and strategic planning skills* A proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups including youth, community members, and senior leaders in government, philanthropy, and business* Experience building coalitions and leading advocacy, lobbying, or awareness campaigns that achieved measurable results* Experience securing funding (from small monthly contributions to gifts of $100,000 or more) from foundations, government, individuals, and businesses - with involvement at the prospecting, cultivation, ask, and follow-up stages* Knowledge of issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusionPrimary DutiesLeadership* Serve as the organization's chief ambassador and spokesperson by communicating CLIA's impact, advocating our priorities, and drawing in resources to help fulfill our mission* Cultivate effective working relationships with elected/appointed state and local government officials, funders, community members, and business leaders* Develop a vision and strategic plan, in partnership with the Board of Directors, to guide the organization* Foster effective teamwork between the Board and the Executive Director by acting as a professional advisor to the Board on all aspects of the CLIA's activities and informing the Board of internal and external issues that affect the organization operations or impact Operations* Develop an operational plan to guide the day-to-day operations based on the strategic direction of the organization* Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the organization* Draft policies for the approval of the Board and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate* Ensure the organization has the proper facilities, equipment, and systems in place to effectively carry out its mission* Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of CLIA's programs Human Capital* Determine staffing requirements and hire, manage, and remove staff as necessary and appropriate* Oversee the development and implementation of the human resources policies, procedures, and practices * Develop and ensure succession plans are in place for all staff positions* Establish a positive, healthy, and safe organizational culture and work environment* Recruit, interview, and hire staff that have the right technical and personal experience and abilities to help further CLIA's mission* Ensure that all staff receive appropriate support, training, guidance, and resources in order to effectively carry out their duties* Implement a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review* Coach and mentor staff on an on-going basis to improve performance Financial Management* Work with staff and the Board to prepare a comprehensive budget* Develop and lead the fundraising strategy that includes grants, donations, and earned income from foundation, corporate, individual, and government sources* Manage organizational finances according to the approved budget* Work with bookkeepers and auditors to prepare and review financial documents* Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organization QualificationsEducation/Experience* Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred* 5 or more years of management experience in the non-profit sector (ideally including experience with program implementation and fundraising)* Experience in the juvenile justice or criminal justice system is a plus Personal characteristics* Adaptability: Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and/or tolerant in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency.* Relationship building: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.* Communication: Speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.* Creativity/Innovation: Develop new and unique ways to improve operations of the organization and to create new opportunities.* Client focused: Anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of internal and external stakeholders to meet or exceed their expectations within the organizational parameters.* Fostering Teamwork: Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.* Leadership: Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.* Decision making: Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the organization.* Organizing: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities* Planning: Determine strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement actions plans, and evaluate the process and results.* Problem solving: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.* Strategic thinking: Assesses options and actions based on trends and conditions in the environment, and the vision and values of the organization. Compensation Salary is commensurate with experience. Budgeted annual salary range is $70,000-$85,000. CLIA pays 75% of the cost of provided healthcare benefits and offers personal paid time off.
