    Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must meet one of the Economist Basic Requirements AND at least one of the Grade-level Requirements (i.e. GS-07 or GS-09) listed below to qualify. Students who will meet the educational requirements set forth below within 90 days of the closing date may apply. See the Required Documents section for submitting necessary proof.

    I. Economist Basic Requirements:

    One of the following (A or B):

    A. Degree: Economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

    OR

    B. Combination of Education and Experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Examples of qualifying experience include (a) individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; (b) supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or (c) teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economic subjects and one of the following: (1) personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.

    AND

    II. Grade-level Requirements

    Applicants must also meet at least one of the following three requirements for directly-related education, specialized experience, or a combination of directly-related education and specialized experience.

    1) Education

    GS-07

    Bachelor’s degree and Superior Academic Achievement (SAA). SAA is the completion of all of the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, and by meeting one of the following three: i. Class standing – must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; ii. Grade-point average (GPA) – GPA of 2.95 or higher overall, a GPA of 2.95 or higher for courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum, or a GPA of 3.45 or higher for your major GPA or for courses in your major completed during the final 2 years; iii. Membership in a national scholastic honor society.

    OR

    One year (18 semester hours or quarter hour equivalent) of graduate education

    GS-09

    Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree or equivalent

    OR

    2) Specialized Experience: Each of the 52 weeks of specialized experience described below must be in or related to the field of economics, and must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This paid or unpaid experience may have been obtained in the private or public sector. Your resume MUST contain a detailed description of your specialized experience or your application will be deemed incomplete and you will be removed from further consideration.

    GS-07

    52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent in scope and responsibility to the next lower grade level (i.e. GS-05) in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as assisting with tasks related to one of the following: preparation of statistical surveys; tabulation and processing of economic data; or, visualization of economic data into charts and/or graphs.

    GS-09

    52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent in scope and responsibility to the next lower grade level (i.e. GS-07) in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as assisting with portions of investigations involving economic topics. An experience indicator at this level includes assisting and supporting senior economists and/or project leaders with portions of their research to prepare preliminary interpretative reports. Examples include collecting, compiling, and arranging economic data for the purpose of drafting preliminary analyses; or, analyzing and interpreting economic data for the purpose of drafting preliminary findings.

    OR

    3) Combination of Education and Specialized Experience as described below. 

    GS-07

    Graduate education (less than one year) and specialized experience as required for GS-07 (less than one year) that when combined totals one year.

    GS-09

    Graduate education (more than one year but less than two) and specialized experience as required for GS-09 (less than one year) that when combined totals one year. Only graduate education beyond the first year (18 semester hours or quarter hour equivalent) can be combined with experience to total one year.

    Applicants MUST submit unofficial academic transcripts as proof of meeting the qualifying educational requirements. Because specific course work is required, applicants MUST submit transcripts from each academic institution in which the required courses were taken in order to receive credit for that course work. Students who will meet educational requirements set forth in the Requirements section, i.e. under Qualifications, within 90 days of the closing date may apply.     Any applicant falsely claiming an academic degree from an accredited school will be subject to actions ranging from disqualification from federal employment to removal from federal service.
