Production Manager, Department of Performing Arts - Georgetown College

Home to the College's undergraduate degree programs in American Musical Culture and Theater & Performance Studies as well as dozens of performing groups in music, theater, and dance, the Department features a renowned faculty and close partnerships with leading arts organizations from the D.C. region and beyond.

The Production Manager (PM) position for The Davis Performing Center, reporting to the Artistic Director, oversees the production administration of Theater and Performance Studies (TPST) season, including 3-4 mainstage productions annually, in addition to a range of other public programs (artist residencies; developmental workshops; forums and convenings; music and dance events; interdisciplinary gatherings; occasional festivals and guest/presented performances, often in collaboration with partners.) The PM ensures productions come in on schedule, within budget, and in sustainable fashions over the course of an academic year. The PM is responsible for initiating professional contracts for guest artists in a timely manner (working closely with our Business Manager), supervising and training crews, managing production budgets, setting work schedules, and mentoring students with an interest in production. The PM will create clear structures of communication and accountability (including for approval of designs, work completion, and coordination of the production shops) in alliance with the educational mission of the Department.

The PM will coordinate communication between the Davis Performing Arts Center and a range of collaborators including other units of the University, professional theatres, professional artists, embassies, and other collaborative partners.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Lead and manage production staff, functioning as part of a collaborative team with other administrative and technical staff, including the Technical Director and Costume Shop Manager, while staying attuned to the disparate work of the Davis Center and educational mission of the Department.
  • Work closely with the Artistic Director, the Community Engagement & Development Manager and the DPA Chair and Program Directors to support collaborations with other organizations and partners.
  • Maintain productive, mutually respectful collaborative relationships with a range of faculty, staff, students, vendors, professional, guests, and collaborators.
  • Guide and facilitate all director/design teams through the design and approval process to guarantee the timely completion of all designs, within allocated budgets, with respect for lead faculty director/project vision.
  • Mentor and support students with an interest in production, arts management and technical theatre, including student SMs for TPST Season, in consultation with directors.
  • Cultivate and work with Artistic Director to designate mentored tech positions for students in disparate spheres for each TPST mainstage project, to assure season integrates with coursework and engages student learning and research.
  • Facilitate post-mortems with lead faculty, staff, student and guest artist participants in process, and ensure follow up, with attention to mission for given projects (from goals that balance artistic value, sustainability, teaching/learning, Community Engagement, and collaboration).Maintain clear communication throughout the production process for TPST season, keeping a pulse on all spheres and acting as a liaison between directors, designers, stage managers, and production and administrative staff.
  • Ensure that the Davis Center's theatres (one 235-seat proscenium theatre, and one 80-seat black box theatre) and their technical equipment are operated and maintained in a safe manner, and complying with safety policies and procedures.
  • Implement and/or advise on repairs and physical upgrades as needed and oversee annual maintenance/renewal projects with the input of others from their areas of expertise.
  • Initiate professional contracts for guest artists and over hire technicians in a timely manner (working closely with our Business Manager and Technical Director).
  • Set production budgets in conversation with Artistic Director, manage production budgets and set work schedules that respect the priorities of the project.

  • B.A. required
  • Minimum of five years' professional experience in production management.
  • Ability to create and effectively manage production calendars and budgets.
  • Demonstrable experience across a range of areas of production (scenery, lighting, sound, multimedia, costume, properties) with fluency in current technical theatre technology.
  • A strong commitment to mentoring and collaborating with students.
  • Must be highly organized.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively.
  • A strong commitment to practicing values of equity, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of activity.
