The Department of Computer Science at George Mason University invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair. The Department of Computer Science, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, has 42 tenured or tenure-track faculty and 10 teaching-track faculty with wide-ranging research interests and strong research groups in cybersecurity, systems and networks, machine learning and data mining, artificial intelligence and software engineering. The Department has seen a substantial increase in computer science majors as enrollment has grown from 550 undergraduates in 2012 to more than 1600 today. In addition, more than 350 graduate students are enrolled in one of four MS programs, and nearly 130 PhD students are advised by faculty. The Department has $8.5 million in annual research expenditures, 12 recipients of the prestigious CAREER/Young Investigator Awards, four IEEE Fellows, and two ACM Fellows.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Dean of the School, the Department Chair is the chief academic and administrative leader for the department and serves as a key member of the School's leadership team. The Chair of Computer Science will provide vision and leadership to advance the department, positioning the department as a leader in innovation and education in computing. S/he will guide a robust scholarship and research agenda, promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, including the development of collaborative academic programs, and grow the proportion of women and minorities in the educational programs.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in computer science or a related field and qualify to be a tenured professor in the Department of Computer Science. Competitive candidates will have an outstanding record in research with a strong record of funding, along with a genuine understanding of the teaching mission and the importance of providing undergraduate and graduate students with the highest quality educational experience. A demonstrated commitment to the effective mentoring of junior faculty is essential. The next Department Chair must have the leadership skills and vision to advance the Department to new heights, which includes a strong sense of where the field is headed and an understanding of several sub-disciplines of computer science. S/he will have unassailable personal and academic integrity, strong oral and written communication skills, and a focus on openness and transparency.

About Us: The Volgenau School of Engineering is a fast-growing force for innovation in technology and education. The school enrolls almost 8,000 students in 35 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs, including several first-of-their-kind offerings. Of the 231 full-time faculty who comprise the School, 95 are tenured, 43 are tenure-track, 60 are instructional faculty, and 33 are research faculty. Located in the heart of Northern Virginia's technology corridor, Mason Engineering stands out for its leadership in emerging areas including big data, cybersecurity, healthcare technology, robotics, signals and communications, and sustainable infrastructure. Over the 12 months ending in November 2018, sponsored research expenditures by the School's faculty exceeded $44 million and sponsored research awards exceeded $67 million.

Mason is the largest public research university in Virginia, with an enrollment exceeding 37,000 students studying in over 200 degree programs. Mason is an innovative, entrepreneurial institution with national distinction in a range of academic fields. It was classified as an R1 research institution in 2016 by the Carnegie Classifications of Institutes of Higher Education, and earned this classification again in December 2018.
