American Sign Language (Term Instructor/Assistant Professor)

The George Mason University College of Education and Human Development invites applications for a full-time term (non-tenure track) instructional faculty position in the Division of Special Education and Disability Research to begin fall 2019. The American Sign Language (ASL) program is an approved foreign language core sequence of courses for undergraduate students that can also be used as an elective sequence in the Masters of Special Education degree program. In addition, this program offers a minor in American Sign Language for undergraduate students. Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching all levels of ASL undergraduate courses during the day and in the evening, participating in curriculum activities to enhance the student learning experience, facilitating student engagement in the ASL lab, engaging with faculty and staff colleagues to advance program initiatives, and supporting adjunct faculty. The teaching load will be a four-course equivalent (12 credits) in both the fall and spring semesters, with the option to add courses under separate contract for the summer.

Qualifications: Applicants must have an earned master's degree in ASL or a related field with preference given to those having an earned doctorate or explicit credentials in ASL, Deaf studies, Deaf education, or ASL interpretation (e.g., ASLTA, RID, CDE, CE/CT, or NIC). Those with a doctoral-level credential are eligible for appointment at the assistant professor rank. The successful candidate must also demonstrate outstanding potential and versatility in teaching, with native or near-native proficiency in ASL so as to converse fluently in high-level professional and academic conversation. In addition, candidates must have an understanding of and extensive background in Deaf culture and familiarity with current research in ASL and Deaf culture. Other preferred qualifications include experience in diverse settings and experience teaching ASL at the post-secondary level.
