Assistant/Associate Professor of Urban Sciences (Tenure-Track Cluster Hire)

The College of Science (COS) is pursuing a multidisciplinary effort to strengthen the Urban Science initiative, facilitated through the Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP), the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS) and the School of Systems Biology (SSB). This new initiative will elevate the capabilities of these units and foster cross-unit collaboration. The key themes for the new positions are Urban Informatics (GGS), Urban Ecology or Urban Wildlife Ecology (ESP), and Cancer and Precision Medicine in the Urban Community Setting (SSB). The proposed Urban Science cluster hires, together with already existing expertise in these Departments as well as the rest of the college, will establish a core transdisciplinary team that will allow us to continue innovation, establishing new academic offerings, and pursuing substantial research opportunities.

The cluster hire consists of three distinct positions in three different academic units. Assistant/Associate Professor of Urban Informatics (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS), within the College of Science (COS), is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for a Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Urban Informatics to be part of this cluster hire in Urban Science. This full-time, Tenure-Track position is scheduled to begin in August 2018 or January 2019.

Responsibilities: We are seeking outstanding candidates with expertise in urban informatics and its applications to infrastructure, environment, or human aspects of cities. We especially encourage candidates with expertise in spatial analysis and modeling, geographic information systems, information visualization, system dynamics, data mining, and/or machine learning. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an externally funded research program, both, individually and as part of a team, and to collaborate with other researchers across COS and the university to enhance transdisciplinary research.

The selected candidate will provide core support to the Urban informatics initiative as well as to the successful and growing GIScience and Geoinformatics programs; teach core and advanced courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (the equivalent of two courses per semester); develop new courses as needed in the area of specialization; mentor graduate students at both the master's and Ph.D. levels; and develop an externally funded research portfolio that will advance the mission of GGS. Service activities are expected.

Required Qualifications: * Successful completion of a Ph.D. in geoinformatics, geography, computer science, physics or a closely related field prior to the first day of the appointment; * Ability to develop a strong and active research agenda in Urban Informatics; * A demonstrated record of publishing peer-reviewed scholarship; * Ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in Geoinformatics and Urban science; and * A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications: * A demonstrated record of seeking/securing external research grants; * Specialization in Urban Informatics with a demonstrated multidisciplinary interest; and * Strong and demonstrated research interest in geoinformatics and its application to urban systems.
