Job Announcement

Be part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team with the Community Service Board (CSB). Works with nursing and administrative supervision and cares for clients with substance use disorders that may be medically compromised, with acute mental illness, and/or developmental disorders. Provides direct care, medication management, and case management services (including biopsychosocial assessment, nursing diagnosis, supportive counseling, psychoeducation programming, nursing interventions, and crisis intervention and treatment.) Consistently provides safe and therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way. Incorporates differences into the provision of care. Conducts all patient care in a patient-centered manner. Integrates knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients throughout the continuum, to include patient education. Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others. Has respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines. Uses an integrated approach toward patient outcomes. Serves as an empowering body to influence patient empowerment, and successful outcomes of clinical quality, through relationships and access-based knowledge. Utilizes standards, guidelines for care delivery. Determines process for delivery of care from direct patient communication, technology, and other healthcare team member collaboration. Ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning. Demonstrates leadership skills in decision making and problem solving. Administers medications and treatments. Works with interdisciplinary team/client to assist client to detoxify safely and meet treatment goals. This is an excellent position for the nurse who has a strong medical background along with knowledge and skills important in a behavioral health unit. This position is designated emergency series personnel and is expected to report for duty even in cases of inclement weather.

This position includes a signing bonus for new hires of $2,000 (full-time) or $1,000 (part-time).

Illustrative Duties

  • Provides nursing services to individuals and/or families in clinics, ambulatory care centers, offices, or community settings;
  • Administers medications and performs treatments;
  • Performs appropriate height, weight, and head circumference measurements;
  • Administers immunizations under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner or registered professional nurse;
  • Solicits contraindications and medical history prior to each injection;
  • Performs necessary laboratory tests and/or specimen collections per agency protocol (e.g., venipuncture; finger, foot, and heel stick; blood pressure checks; and urine testing);
  • Records and reports testing and specimen collection findings;
  • Prepares lab specimens collected for shipment to other labs;
  • Maintains a neat clinic area, assuring supply room is properly stocked and organized and that equipment is cleaned, sterilized and maintained in good working order.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of practical nursing skills gained through an accredited practical nursing program;
  • Skill in performing technical nursing procedures (e.g., injections, venipuncture, blood pressure screening);
  • Ability to identify questionable test findings;
  • Ability to perform CPR or perform emergency treatment for life-threatening conditions;
  • Ability to elicit sufficient pertinent medical information from a client and record a medical history that is complete and accurate;
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with clients and staff members.

Employment Standards


Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program; plus two years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

  • Possession of current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
  • CPR/First Aid required within 3 months of hire
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer. A TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter. This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies).

Experience working in the fields of psychiatric mental health nursing, substance use disorders, intellectual disabilities, medical surgical or relevant clinical specialty.

Must be capable of providing nursing care and assistance including physically assisting large adults in hygiene. The ability to sit, walk, stand, bend and write as needed; use key board driven equipment to enter data in electronic health record; review data on computer monitor; take vital signs and administer injections. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview and will include medication exercise.
