The Director of Dance will curate the annual 7 week ballet season and will collaborate with the Vice President of Dance and International Programming on curation of the main stage dance season. Produce and direct the execution of ballet and dance series to include mainstage performances and audience engagement exhibits and activities. Collaborate with Damian Woetzel on the production of DEMO series. Represent dance within the Kennedy Center to champion and sustain the Center's commitment to artform, and manage staff and capacity needed to present programs. Represent the Kennedy Center programming locally, nationally and internationally at presenter conferences, performances and industry convenings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

40% Curate annual 7 week ballet season. Collaborate with Vice President of Dance and International Programming on curation of main stage dance season. Produce and manage the execution of both ballet and dance series. Develop, produce and collaborate with colleagues on the learning/creation of audience engagement activities in support ballet, dance and the Kennedy Center. Direct staff's execution of all programs.

20% Curate and produce dance events on the Center's Millennium Stage including the annual Local Dance Commissioning Project and National Dance Day and World Ballet Day. Collaborate with Damian Woetzel on the production of DEMO series. Develop and oversee activity as part of the REACH expansion (opening autumn 2019).

15% Develop and oversee annual programmatic budget. Negotiate and manage contractual obligations and operations of Kennedy Center's Ballet and Contemporary Dance series. Work with Orchestra manager to fulfill 7 week CBA, participate in KCOHO negotiations.

15% Oversee department and direct staff which includes Program Manager, Coordinator, Intern and volunteer to manage programmatic and logistical details for approximately 80 performances per season. Maintain a current understanding of artistic developments in the arenas of local, national, and international dance and performing arts. Represent Kennedy Center throughout the industry. Participate as a member of senior staff on process and program development, task forces, senior staff interviews, strategic plan component development, board meetings and other institutional agendas.

10% Lead calendar and strategic planning for Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Work with Center's Marketing, PR and Development departments to build institutional and programmatic support for Ballet, and Contemporary Dance programs

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in the arts, arts management or other related field.
  • At least eight years' experience of increasing responsibility in a performing arts and dance environment.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required
  • Technologically proficient with strong computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel in a PC environment, is essential.
  • The incumbent must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and must be comfortable with and passionate about the world-class artists who appear on our series.
  • Resourcefulness, excellent problem-solving skills, strong demonstrated experience in contracting and budgeting, and the ability to manage, engage, and motivate a team are essential.
