Part-time Recreation Leader II

The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. Overview
The City of Alexandria is looking for friendly, high-energy individuals interested in working in a collaborative environment and who is fun, energetic and loves working with people. This position is expected to provide excellent customer service, by greeting with a smile, meeting patrons expectations, staying informed, and having a keen eye for safety.

What You Should Bring
Each member of our team is accountable for the outstanding delivery of services to the community. You will work to meet the recreation needs of our community. You will ensure that all activities are fun, safe and orderly. You will have the support of and work under the direction of a Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Manager. You will execute programming that meets the high standards of excellence.

The Opportunity
  • Administers first aid as required;
  • Assist with special events and other programs in the Recreation Center;
  • Communicates activity status and problems encountered to higher level staff;
  • Develops and distributes promotional and marketing information to the community;
  • Maintains a professional appearance and courteous attitude;
  • Operates a point of sale computer and keeps an accurate account of all monetary transactions using cash handling procedures;
  • Performs light cleaning;
  • Prepares reports, records and schedules as required;
  • Provides exceptional customer experiences to all patrons in person and on the phone;
  • Provides information, explains and enforces policies and procedures to the public in a positive and professional matter;
  • Provides set-up and take-down of equipment for daily activities and promote and encourage participation in scheduled activities;
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.


About the Department
The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of an effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; some experience as a Recreation Leader I, First Aid training, valid driver's license issued by state of residence; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Some college level courses and experience working with an at-risk population, schools, therapeutic recreation, youth sports programs and other support services programs. Can speak other languages, in addition to English. Experience working with computer programs. The candidate has the ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Strong written and verbal communication skills are needed.
