University of Maryland at College Park:  The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (http://www.mse.umd.edu) is seeking candidates for a Faculty Specialist position as Reactor Operations Manager in the University of Maryland Radiation Facilities. This position will be responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations, as well as, the maintenance and emergency preparedness of the Nuclear Reactor. Insuring that these activities are performed safely and in accordance with COMAR and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) operating license and technical specifications. In addition to the Reactor, this position is expected to be involved in the operation of the operations and maintenances of the other machines in the Radiation Facilities.

Position duties shall include but not limited to:

• Overseeing the daily operations and maintenance of the Reactor including surveillances, upgrades, experiments, labs, training of student operators, as well as maintaining reactor procedures and license documents;
• Maintain involvement with other aspects of the Radiation Facilities including Irradiator, Accelerators, and Classes;
• Troubleshoot and repair analog, digital and electromechanical systems at the component level;
• Responsible for maintaining compliance with NRC regulations
• Enforcement of administrative rules, operating procedures and regulations to ensure that the Radiation Facilities operate in a safe and competent manner at all times;
• Aid in preparing written response(s) to RFQ’s, grant/contract proposals, as well as, boiler plate sections for proposal submittals;
• Knowledge and/or ability to learn applicable laws, regulations, and licensing requirements related to reactor operations, including COMAR, NRC 10CFR, NUREG, and ANSI/ANS standards
• Conduct initial investigations of unusual Reactor operational occurrences and prepares the necessary corrective action reports;
• Working with experimenters to ensure safety and approval of experiments and shall assist users (researchers/students/government/industrial) in experimental setup;
• Reviewing all new experiments and all proposed changes in the existing experiments for compatibility with facility design and license requirements;
• Ability to plan, organize and oversee assigned work programs including monitoring schedules and evaluating the work of student operators;
• Oversee the training of new reactor operators. Schedule the testing with the U.S NRC;
• Assist with the planning of the yearly emergency response drill.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree specializing in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or allied field.  At least 2-4 or years of directly related work experience; with knowledge of principles and practices of radiation producing device operations and radiation safety.  Must be able to successfully pass T & R process (background check); must meet / pass physical exam based on NRC fitness for duty ANSI 15.4.
• Required two years of hands on experience with either a panoramic irradiator, particle accelerators, and/or research reactors.
• Must have Senior Reactor Operator license and within one year, obtain license on the Maryland University Training Reactor

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Must be able to be certified Trustworthy & Reliable or equivalent;
• Must meet/pass physical exam based on NRC fitness for duty ANSI 15.4
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair analog, digital and electromechanical systems at the component level.
• Experience with research reactor operations and licensing
• Knowledge or ability to learn applicable laws, regulations, and licensing requirements related to irradiator operations, including NRC 10CFR, NUREG, and ANSI/ANS standards
• Knowledge of how to use, calibrate, and interpret analytical data from equipment to monitor for radiation (gamma spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, other nuclear instrumentation).
• Ability to plan, organize and oversee assigned work programs including monitoring schedules and evaluating the work of student operators.
• Possesses excellent organizational skills and provide effective communication, both orally and in writing. Ability to write clear and concise technical reports, procedures, training manuals and customer reports.
• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of radiation producing device operations and radiation safety.
• Ability to interface with machine shop and facility maintenance & similar technical support.
• Reactor and Accelerator and Irradiator experience preferred
