The Fairfax County Park Authority seeks an enthusiastic design professional that is passionate about parks and place-making to fill the role of Landscape Architect III to plan and design parks in a dynamic and growing county.

Leads innovative park design and planning projects that incorporate enduring and emerging best practices, in order to advance this mission. Demonstrates the capability to perform design and planning work independently and in collaboration with others, and will be skilled at working in partnership with those in the public and private sectors to meet park and recreation needs, in concert with operational and financial requirements. Manages and delivers a range of projects that include park master plans, design guidelines, construction documents, site plans, cost estimates, and feasibility studies.

Duties include routine presentations to citizen groups, boards and commissions. The ideal candidate should have strong communication, negotiation and presentation abilities to facilitate and conduct meetings and workshops with public groups, citizens and other stakeholders to gain support for projects, share information, explain issues and resolve conflicts. Requires regular site visits to inspect the progress of project work and requires participation in regular off-site meetings.

Should possess demonstrated proficiency using computer software to perform design and planning tasks, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, AutoCAD, and GIS; knowledge of federal, state and county codes, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, and experience with regulatory processes and permitting; strong technical and graphical design skills; knowledge of local building and landscape materials; and exceptional time management and prioritization skills.

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from an

accredited four-year college or university in landscape architecture (four or five year course) or a related field; plus three years of progressively responsible experience in landscape architecture and/or park planning.

Valid driver's License

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background and driving record check to the satisfaction the of employer.

Possession of a valid Planning, Landscape Architecture or related field certification and/or license. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, AutoCAD, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications used in the preparation of design and planning documents. Experience in review of complex rezoning applications, conceptual park designs, and engineered site plans. Excellent oral and written communication, organization and presentation skills, and a demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and diverse project teams. Knowledge of park system planning processes and urban design principles and techniques. Knowledge of facility design specifications and stormwater management requirements.

Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor, incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment. Must communicate with others. Employee may require to lift up to 15 pounds. Occasional site visits may include moderate hiking/walking up to 2 miles. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
