Safely operates commercial vehicles and light motorized equipment in a variety of solid waste activities. Operates refuse collection vehicles and light motorized equipment in a variety of solid waste activities to include rear-end-loaders, side-loaders, front-end-loaders, roll-offs. Completes daily vehicle pre/post trip inspections. Follow instructions from supervisory personnel and communicate any problems to a supervisor. Prepare and complete all required logs and reports including reports on traffic incidents. Operates various communication systems (cell phones, radios, etc.) in accordance with county policies and Federal Communication Commission. Leads work crews engaged in a variety of solid waste activities. Maintain good customer/employee/supervisor relations. Provide information to customers in a helpful, courteous, efficient manner.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Responsibilities:
  • Reports for duty on time in proper uniform and physical condition.
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with the Solid Waste Management Program safety programs and guidelines.
  • Complies with the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services Safety Competencies.
  • Complies with the standards of the county, including but not limited to the Drug & Alcohol, safety, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services guiding principles.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles for cleanliness and is in good working condition
  • Follows all applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B" or higher.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Exceptional safety and driving record, with at least five years accident-free. At least five years of work experience as an equipment operator of medium to heavy motorized equipment in the solid waste or similar industry. Three or more years operating refuse collection equipment, especially, side-load and rear-end load type collection vehicles servicing residential customers.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee of this position will be required to complete the following to the satisfaction of the hiring department: criminal background check, driving recording check, pre-employment examination and commercial driver's license screening.

NOTE: Is required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Handle strenuous activities and repetitive motions;
  • Perform duties in any type of weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).
  • Ability to perform sedentary tasks.
  • Ability to coordinate eye, hand and foot movement in order to operate motorized vehicles.
