Assistant Director for Learning Design - Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS)

The Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) is the center for teaching excellence and innovation at Georgetown University. CNDLS staff members, in addition to faculty and graduate affiliates, are engaged in advanced research on teaching practices, assessment techniques, instructional and learning design, media development, and technologies to enhance student learning. Whether rethinking course design, assessing curricula, or creating a dynamic digital archive, CNDLS works to align teaching practices with student engagement and learning. CNDLS is an integral part of Georgetown's efforts to rethink the Future(s) of Higher Education and the Center has recently developed Georgetown's new Program in Learning, Design and Technology , a program at the cutting edge of the future of innovations in teaching and learning in higher education. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • CNDLS seeks an Assistant Director for Learning Design to play a critical role in the planning, scheduling, monitoring, and execution of blended and online courses, modules, and instructional materials. The primary job responsibilities are to thoroughly understand the design needs, scope, and schedule for a project, serving as the day to day point of contact for faculty members. In this work, this position serves as both the project manager and instructional design lead to ensure that courses and course materials are developed to meet high quality standards.
  • Works with and guides the course team members (Subject Matter Experts, Media Specialists, Graphic Designers and Course Builders) during the project's lifecycle -from planning to implementation to follow-up.
  • Accountable for the success of all projects under his or her supervision.
  • Works one-on-one with faculty to formulate learning objectives, align course content with these objectives, and identify appropriate instructional strategies that take advantage of the online learning space.
  • Assists faculty members in preparing courses that follow good practice in areas such as accessibility, assessment methods, and teaching strategies.
  • Designs and develops prototypes of pedagogically sound technology-enhanced learning activities.
  • Helps to develop training materials for faculty, conducts learning design research and presents findings the form of conference presentations and papers.
  • Manages and mentors junior staff, facilitates communication among management, staff, and faculty, and provides ongoing support and evaluation of courses.


Requirements
  • Master's degree
  • 5+ years of experience in instructional design
  • Experience with a variety of instructional technologies, as well as a working understanding of HTML/CSS
  • Experience with working in a learning management system - preferably Canvas
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community
  • Ability to work with faculty to support effective technology-enhanced learning in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online courses
  • Expertise in formative and summative assessment designs and instruments
  • Team player who is able to manage multiple competing priorities and complete projects according to schedule
