Associate Counsel for International Matters - Office of General Counsel

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

The Associate Counsel for International Matters will provide legal services to the University community, with a particular focus on the establishment and maintenance of new and existing international offices and entities. This is a new position in the Office of General Counsel and will report to the University Counsels who oversee research and international work.
  • Advise on the creation, management, and governance of foreign offices and entities, with an initial focus on the offices and entities that support the University's international research activities.
  • Working with local counsel as appropriate, advise the University's various departments and offices with respect to compliance with local laws in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Advise on the application of U.S. laws (including sanctions and the FCPA) to the University's international activities and operations.
  • Serve as a central resource for compliance-related requirements (e.g., filings with relevant local agencies and authorities) with respect to the University's international presences.
  • Working closely with other attorneys in the office and local counsel, review and advise on various contractual, real property, tax, and employment law matters related to the University's international presences. Assist with the development and implementation of University policies and processes related to international activities and operations.


Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate
  • D.C. bar membership (or immediate eligibility for membership)
  • 5 to 10 years of experience as a practicing attorney, with a strong preference for at least 3 to 5 years of experience advising on international matters, and a demonstrated ability to handle complex matters independently.
