Sr. Director of Development for Athletics - Office of Advancement

The Senior Director of Development for Athletics serves as the chief advancement officer for the Department of Athletics, and in that role leads the effort to raise funds from alumni, parents and friends in support of the student-athletes, coaches and administrators who represent Georgetown University. This position also serves in a leadership capacity for University Development, ensuring collaboration and consistent development practices across the University and the management of external relationships on behalf of athletics. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as major gifts officer for approximately 125 prospects rated at $50K - $5M in order to raise $3-$5M in gifts annually. Makes between 100-125 face-to-face visits, and has regular substantive contact with donors. Submits a set goal of proposals ($250K+) annually, closes major gifts ($50K+) and solicits volunteers as appropriate and provides "assists" to colleagues in order to strengthen internal collaboration. Responsible for campaign and development strategies.

GU360 Sales Force System
  • Responsible for substantive moves data and verifies accuracy of contact information to ensure quality and accuracy of gift reports and correct gift accounting for prospects.

Budget & Communications
  • Operates within budgetary guidelines for assigned activities. If applicable, manages travel budget or program budgets as assigned.
  • Maintains a current body of knowledge about Georgetown Athletics and its development priorities. Assists as needed in implementing communication strategies and campaign materials. Works with the associate director of stewardship and director of engagement to ensure the AD's priorities are being stewarded and communicated broadly.

Leadership solicitation staffing, presidential briefings
  • Staffs coaches and Director of Athletics when appropriate and writes briefings and talking points. Handles miscellaneous administrative responsibilities.

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Seven to ten years of directly applicable development experience, including successful volunteer management and gift solicitation experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and highly developed interpersonal interaction skills
  • Previous experience working in an intercollegiate athletics preferred
  • Strong negotiating and marketing skills and leadership ability required
  • Able to give significant attention to detail and to be able to keep focused on priorities as set by the Director of Athletics and Vice President for Advancement
  • General technical literacy to understand basic computer operation
  • Proficiency on PRM and Gambit will be necessary for adherence to prospect management system
  • Ability to use good judgment and ethics in handling confidential materials with sensitivity and discretion

Position requires significant travel and flexibility to work weekends, evenings and early mornings to meet prospects and attend athletic events.
