University Information Services (UIS) provides Georgetown University with the core technology resources and support services for teaching, learning, and research.
The Learning Management Systems (LMS) Administrator participates in the operation and maintenance of scholarly systems in support of the University's core mission: teaching, learning, and research. They are primarily responsible for, and provides technical leadership in support of the campus learning management systems (LMS), currently Blackboard and Canvas supplemented by a number of technologies to include Echo360, Zoom, Respondus and an evolving suite of tools for lecture capture, collaboration and supporting technologies to include course management systems, digital portfolios, digital repositories, synchronous collaboration tools and rich media distribution systems. The LMS Administrator is responsible for the support, design, development, implementation, delivery, and maintenance of resources used for instructional functions. They are the primary system administrator for the University's LMS, as well as the integrated tools, and oversee the installation of all system updates, upgrades, integrated tools, and other software integrated with the LMS to include middleware. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Work within the university's existing LMS infrastructure, developing testing and implementing system patches and upgrades, data conversion and maintenance as required, troubleshooting and answering level II and level III support requests.
- Maintain knowledge of current industry trends, participating in the evaluation of other learning management tools, which might be used to supplement existing Georgetown tools and technologies; cultivate and maintain strong relationships with faculty, students, academic technologists, and University Information Services staff to ensure the effective use of LMS tools to enhance learning.
- Oversee day-to-day operation of the LMS (currently Blackboard and Canvas), configure and modify the LMS to match university policies and procedures; manage data flow between the LMS and Student Information System (snapshots, course creation, user creation and related processes); and manage community areas within the LMS including appearance, tabs, and settings.
- Review systems performance proactively, analyze system outages, and manage and monitor system performance.
- Maintain procedures and policies to ensure the security and integrity of systems/networks; write and maintain technical procedures and policy documentation; create, manage, and enforce LMS standards, policies, and procedures; and review and improve system operations practices.
- Use expertise to help troubleshoot complex user support problems, and interact with vendor and other technical staff to devise problem resolution.
- Provide immediate response to problems and emergency situations affecting normal operations; and serve as an escalation contact for support issues, including interactions with LMS and other vendor support services.
- Provide high quality customer service across the LMS suite of tools.
- Administer the planning, testing and implementation of new LMS releases, service packs, patches, system scripting/programming work associated with maintaining and expanding LMS system automation and integration with third-party systems
- Ensure successful testing through system upgrades; oversee data conversion and archiving of existing course material.
- Work closely with academic programs to support course development projects including design, production, and testing of courses and programs and successful archiving of historical course material.
- Assist in research, analysis and evaluation of emerging LMS technologies, software and hardware.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, technology, management information systems, computer engineering or similar degree or equivalent related work experience
- Three years progressively responsible experience as a learning management system administrator, working with systems implementations and maintenance
- Strong interpersonal communication skills are essential with the ability to communicate complex technical material in a straightforward manner, often with nontechnical audiences
- Ability to communicate with multiple constituents on campus to include faculty, staff and IT professionals; Ability to keep communication lines open and moving forward in a productive manner
- Ability to collaborate with project team members, managers, and leadership to assess project needs and must have demonstrated the ability to work effectively with a diverse constituency
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to work effectively with a team
- Ability to troubleshoot and communicate effectively with faculty and staff with varying degrees of technical knowledge/aptitude; Ability to be flexible, open-minded, and comfortable with changing responsibilities and duties as new and additional needs become known
- Recent experience with the server administration of Blackboard Learn 9.1
Preferred qualifications
- Basic understanding of instructional design principles, practices, and/or theories
- Experience with content authoring tools such as Captivate, Articulate, and Lectora
- Experience in higher education with direct experience implementing and managing Blackboard/Canvas highly preferred.
- At least three years' experience with Linux, Java, web services, SAML or SQL
