Simulation Technician - School of Nursing & Health Studies

The Simulation Technician is an essential role in supporting the general mission of the School of Nursing & Health Studies - education of future health care providers and leaders. The individual in this role will handle the day-to-day tasks which must be performed to ensure safe and efficient operation of the clinical simulation center. Responsibilities include operating the human patient simulators, setting up and breaking down simulated clinical rooms, monitoring supply levels, performing routine maintenance on simulators, maintaining access to the center during events, and performing general clerical functions. This position is necessary to support the manager of the nursing simulation center, faculty, students and courses at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, medical school, medical center and community continuing education. It is also important that the individual in this role has the ability to manage a staff of Federal Work Study students is imperative, especially in the absence of the Manager of the Simulation Center. Duties include but are not limited to:

Operations
  • Operate Human Patient Simulators and Facilitate Skills-lab Sessions.
  • Running the HPS for simulation sessions for the undergraduate and graduate programs at NHS as well as for the medical school, medical center and off campus contracts.
  • Works with instructors and professors in scenario development and ensuring physical readiness of the simulators and simulation areas.
  • Facilitates laboratory sessions in the low-fidelity encounter spaces.
  • Maintaining facility access during scheduled events.
  • Managing the daily activities of the Federal Work Study Students.
  • This individual is also to become a timekeeper in the GMS system so that they can monitor and approve any hours workday by these students.
  • Facilitate the coordination of the volunteers for and assist in the implementation of the Poverty Simulation.
  • Trained as a time-keeper in GMS. Enters and approves time for the standardized patients and approves the time entered by the federal work study students.


General Maintenance
  • Maintenance of simulators and other technologies within the center, including basic simulator repairs, basic audio-visual repairs and improvements, as well as routine upkeep of the simulators, control rooms, and conference rooms.
  • Maintain appearance and tidiness of all simulation center spaces.
  • The ability to troubleshoot any issues that arise in any of the technology in the lab.


Monitor Supply Levels
  • Assist the Manager of Simulation Center in performing general inventory of supplies.
  • Documenting supply levels in inventory system.
  • Make recommendations on supplies to be ordered.
  • General maintenance of our inventory system, including any upgrades as needed.


General Computer and Clerical Functions
  • Perform basic processing of data of different forms to aid in research efforts being conducted in the center, including, but not limited to pre and post test data and simulation evaluation data.
  • Enter scheduling data into the calendar.
  • Updating simulation center Standard Operating Procedure Manual and/or Policy and procedure Manual as needed.
  • Updating existing set up check-lists, created by incumbent or creating new check-lists for newly created simulations.


Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience or two years' experience related to medical care, simulation, and/or technology
  • Basic knowledge of medical technologies and/or healthcare delivery
  • Excellent computer skills are required; experience with Mac O/S X is desirable.
  • As the Simulation Center is the critical for the operation of the On -Campus Intensives (OCI's), it is required that the individual in this role commit to working weekend time during these events. During this time, the Simulation technician must be able to work independently, meeting the needs of the faculty, while managing the student workers assigned to work for the OCI. Weekend hours will vary, but in general weekends will be worked approximately every 13 weeks for 2-3 weekends in a row. Weekend hours to be split with the manager of the simulation center whenever possible.
  • Employee will be trained in operating the human patient simulators and performing other technical functions within the simulation center. This individual may be asked to attend training sessions in order to build their knowledge base and their ability to troubleshoot problems and issues that may arise with the simulators or any software systems used in the lab. This could involve travel if the training can't be done in house. Strong organizational and office computer skills; high level of communication skills; ability to coordinate multiple assignments with independence and a strong diplomatic sense for handling persons at many levels. The ability to assist the manager of the simulation center in any scholarship activities that may occur in the laboratory setting.
