Requirements

Th e Laboratory Animal Technician , is a non-exempt mid-level position. It exists to support the Division of Comparative Medicine's animal husbandry function in support of animal research initiatives. The Georgetown University Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) oversees the Research Resource Facility (RRF) which supports animal research and teaching activities for the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and the Main Campus. The Husbandry Services team is dedicated to providing excellent care of laboratory animals. We embrace the standards set forth by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC International), the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (1996 edition), and the principles and practices of the Veterinary profession.

The position performs daily husbandry for laboratory animals.duties include but are not limited to:
  • Handling, feeding, watering, changing cage and monitoring health of laboratory animals.
  • Assisting with cage wash and autoclave operation and sanitize areas and/or equipment.
  • Following standard operating procedures.
  • Maintaining compliance with applicable laws and regulations.


Incumbent will be working in a designated area, but will also spend a significant amount of time in the animal facility where he/she could be exposed to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals

Qualifications
  • Minimum of a high school diploma
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Work in hot and/or steamy environments
  • Work with animals/animal odors
  • Perform work that involves repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions
  • Must possess verbal and written communication skills to read and follow instructions in English
