Requirements

Admissions Officer, School of Medicine

The Admissions Officer serves as a primary contact for prospective students, maintaining a portion of the 14,000+ applications for six programs within the School of Medicine and responding to questions and concerns regarding admissions policies, procedures, course requirements and other related information. The incumbent communicates our mission and vision with the purpose of maximizing the quality of applicants to the medical school through graduate fairs, virtual fairs, presentations, and social media.

The Admissions Officer participates in evaluating application credentials on a portion of the completed files for a first-round application cognitive and non-cognitive review based on general criteria established by the Committee on Admissions and the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions. Working directly with applicants--prospective, interviewed, wait-listed, and accepted-the Admissions Officer periodically presents, through formal presentations and informal conversation in a variety of settings, an overview of the School of Medicine (philosophy, curriculum, school resources, and student life) and the application process to medical schools. The incumbent ensures successful management of the application management system and regularly interacts with outside vendors, the general public, prospective applicants, and current applicants via phone, e-mail, on-line, and in person meetings.

The Admissions Officer, reporting to the Assistant Dean for Admissions, works horizontally with the Assistant Director, Admissions Officer, and Admissions Coordinator. The work of the Admissions Officer directly promotes and ties into Georgetown University's ideals of diversity in our students, our commitment to justice and the common good, our intellectual openness and international character, and spirit of Cura Personalis (care for the whole person). Duties include but are not limited to:

Credential Evaluation
  • Initially evaluates application credentials and renders admissions interview decisions for a shared number of applicants.
  • Under general guidelines established by the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and the Committee on Admissions, the incumbent reviews and evaluates completed applications to determine which applicants make the initial cut for interview or further review. Significant independent judgment is required when evaluating applications, especially when weighing the non-cognitive aspects in the context of the entire application. The number of applications reviewed varies, but is currently 10,000+ applications/year (2018). Files are reviewed using on-line database systems.

Recruitment and Outreach
  • Communicate our mission and vision with the intent and purpose of maximizing the quality of applicants to the medical school. Examples include: representing the medical school at various off-campus recruiting functions such as graduate school fairs, virtual fairs, and on-campus information sessions.
  • Respond to prospective applicant, applicant, and general public inquiries on the phone, by e-mail, on-line, and in person.
  • Manages projects that help attract students to the School of Medicine.
  • The Admissions Officer must understand and respond to the communication needs of prospective applicants through social media, brochure updates, and website content development.

Official Publications & Recruitment Collateral
  • The Admissions Officer assists with writing, updating, and reviewing the Program Summary, Website and other official publications of the Office of Admissions, to ensure accuracy, especially, but not limited to, the curriculum, student life, philosophy, and student experiences.

Data Manager
  • Responsible for the successful operation of the AMCAS Application System, Application Platforms (ZAP/AMP), Banner, and Net-ID within the Office of Admissions. Ensures timely processing and movement of files throughout the application, review, and decision process.

Requirements
