The Academic Counselor is one of 12 professional staff whose time is largely devoted to the academic advising of 3700 undergraduate students pursing 47 majors and 50+ in Georgetown College, as well as interacting with the main campus faculty who teach them, other advisors, and the team's administrative support staff. S/he joins other academic counselors as well as the advising deans of the College in support of the Dean of the College in carrying out his responsibility (as defined by Georgetown University Faculty Handbook) for the general effectiveness of the instructional programs of the College, and in carrying out academic policies and regulations. Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Academic Counselor has duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Monitors students' progress toward degrees, arbitrates important academic issues, oversees and approves registration for courses, provides academic guidance, adjudicates and interprets academic regulations of the College, and supports academic orientation to the University.
  • Judiciously exercises his or her authority to handle and resolve many delicate and complex conflicts between student and faculty, student and parent, parent and the institution, with all appropriate tact, sensitivity, and a sense of the academic standards to be applied to each such conflict.
  • Ensures the integrity of the academic record for approximately 350 advisees - reviews/approves/advises on such matters as transfer credit, study abroad programs, changes to a student's academic program, and exceptions in the student's degree audit.
  • Consistent with Georgetown's commitment to cura personalis (care of the whole person), supports and advises students on any and all matters which interfere with personal well-being and academic success; and makes frequent referrals to - and has regular contact with - campus partner offices based on his/her well-versed knowledge about the services those offices provide.
  • Participates in various roles in College Academic Council events, office retreats, New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Weekend, and Commencement activities.


Qualifications
  • Master of Arts degree or equivalent in a liberal arts discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in higher education advising or administration
  • Demonstrated interest in academic advising
  • Appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education
  • An understanding of Georgetown's Jesuit and Catholic identity
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills and good listening skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, to meet time-sensitive deadlines, and to set priorities
  • Detail orientation and problem-solving preference
  • Ability to work well under pressure and function as a team player
  • Diplomacy and confidence to handle a variety of situations, especially those of a confidential nature and in interactions with faculty, parents and partner offices
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population
  • Preference for familiarity with student information systems


The annual salary range for this position is $50,000 - $55,000.
