Dewberry has an immediately available opportunity for an Assistant Controller to join our Corporate Accounting & Finance Department at our headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.

The Assistant Controller is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Assistant Controller manages the Financial Service Group with 5 staff accountants. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger, financial reporting, audit management, annual budget. The Assistant Controller will need to build working relationship with all levels of management.

Responsibilities

  • Manages an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close, including account analysis and reconciliations ;
  • Ensures accounting policies are in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and tax requirements;
  • Ensures timely issuance the financial reporting and maintains general ledger structure;
  • Reviews project financial performance for revenue recognition;
  • Supports annual operations budget activities;
  • Manages FAR Indirect Rate schedules for reporting to federal and state agencies;
  • Coordinates timely with various external audit efforts such as the year-end financial audit, overhead audits;
  • Manages audit requests from government agencies;
  • Collaborates with other Accounting teams to support overall department goals and objectives;
  • Communicates with Operations managers and project managers to resolve financial issues;
  • Develops or improves the processes, procedures and workflow tools within the Department to ensure efficiency, quality and accuracy;
  • Manages, trains and mentors staff accountants, including establish goals and objectives annually to enhance their professional development;
  • Supports firm wide financial reporting or analysis need;
  • Reviews and keeps up-to-date the policies and procedures relating to accounting areas assigned;
  • Participates in the development, modification and review of accounting systems, reporting methods, and controls. Coordinates accounting functions with IT as necessary.


Required Skills & Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • C.P.A. preferred, but not required
  • Minimum of 15 years of direct experience performing accounting and financial reporting
  • Minimum 5 years of management experience
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Experience with Government Contracting and FAR regulations would be a plus
  • Knowledge with DCAA filing preferred, but not required
  • Ability to develop and establish financial policies and procedures.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Ability to make independent judgment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Excel and Word
