Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking bright, highly motivated individuals for an exciting one-year Management Internship in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide new college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Management Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation

2018 and 2019 college graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have no professional work experience in an area related to the internship are welcome to apply. Applications will be considered from candidates who have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2018 or 2019 prior to the start date of the Internship or who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.

Position Available

Arlington Economic Development

Business Investment Intern. The Business Investment Group (BIG) at AED has a mission to attract and retain companies in Arlington, thereby creating jobs and furthering the economic development of Arlington County. This is an exciting time in the field of economic development, and BIG's work has led to several major successes in recent years including Amazon's HQ2, major corporate relocations (Nestle, Lidl), and an overall shift in the perception of Arlington as a technology center on the East Coast. BIG is seeking an energetic and motivated management intern to join the team and assist with research, data collection/analysis, writing and special projects in the BIG focus areas of business attraction, business retention and international trade. The intern would assist BIG with the following work efforts and other departmental priorities that arise. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with and analyzing large data sets but equally comfortable in new situations, since the nature of our work is dynamic. We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented but also able to see the BIG picture and pro-actively identify worthwhile projects, areas for improvement, etc.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct industry and company research to assist workflows and deliverables of the BIG team members (e.g. developing industry lists, infographics, business retention strategies, tradeshow preparation, marketing collateral, etc.);
  • Upload, validate and clean up company/industry data within departmental databases to strengthen our business intelligence;
  • Conduct market/company research for domestic and international conferences and trade shows;
  • Assist with developing and creating marketing materials for the department; and
  • Assist with business events planning and execution (e.g. Arlington Premiere, executive luncheons, speaking engagements, conferences).


Selection Criteria

We anticipate filling these positions between July 1, 2019 and September 1, 2019. Therefore, applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August 2019 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field.

Minimums:
  • Must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2018 or 2019 prior to the start date of the Internship or are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.
  • Management Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship.
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above. Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.

Degree Requirements :

Business Investment Intern : Business Administration, Economics, Marketing, Public Administration, or a related degree.

  • Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
    • Proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite including MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Powerpoint;
    • Use of data analytics to support strategic ideas and decisions; and/or
    • Communicating and presenting to stakeholders.

Additional Information

Work Hours: 40 hours/week. Monday - Friday with some flexibility. Availability to participate in evening and early morning business events.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:

Paid Leave : Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid holidays each year.

Health and Dental Insurance : Three group health insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye care needs.

Life Insurance : A group term policy of basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker status.

Retirement : The County offers three vehicles to help you prepare for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also contributes to this plan.

For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) . The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay period, in this plan. The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your base pay.

Other Benefits: The County also offers health, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; long-term care insurance; tuition assistance; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other employee benefits.

Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.

Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.

Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.

Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
