Temporary Aquatic Fitness Instructor

The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. Overview
We are seeking individuals who are reliable, enthusiastic, and positive who can work with community members of all ages. Our successful aquatic programs start with Mommy and Me to adult level classes based on the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program. We offer various specialty classes including shallow and deep-water aerobics. Our employees contribute to the culture that our City values. To best serve in this position, you should have a working knowledge of fitness, exercise, recreation and leisure programming. Our Temporary Aquatic Fitness Instructor should be available to work various hours: Sunday through Saturday between 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Each member of our team is accountable for the outstanding delivery of services to the community. You will work to meet the needs of our community. You will ensure all activities are fun, safe, and orderly. You will have the support of and work under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Manager. You will execute programming that meet the high standards of excellence. You are to be trustworthy, knowledgeable of the field of fitness, motivational, dedicated, demonstrate patience and understanding to participants, be outgoing, and genuinely interested in participant improvement.

The Opportunity
  • Complete required class paper work including attendance sheets;
  • Inspect equipment and reporting unsafe equipment to supervisor;
  • Prepare for class instruction including lesson plans and curriculum;
  • Provide tailored Aquatics instruction to student's needs based upon student's performance evaluation;
  • Recommend purchase of supplies;
  • Ability to lead and instruct specialty classes (i.e. Adapted Aquatics (participants with disabilities) or Aquatic Aerobics);
  • Ability to lead and instruct Learn to Swim classes for all ages and skill levels;
  • Perform related work as required.

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience as a Recreation Leader II, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training, valid driver's license issued by state of residence. Small Pool Manager: possession of a valid Red Cross or comparable Senior Life Saving and Swimming Pool Operator's Certificate. Assistant Pool Manager: (Large Pool) same as for a Small Pool Manager, plus two years swimming pool experience, and the ability to perform routine maintenance/repair work on pool equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED; three year of experience as an Aquatic Instructor , or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training, valid driver's license issued by state of residence. Possession of a valid CPR/First AID certificate and a valid WSI certificate.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.
