Medical Supervisor (PRN)

An Overview
This Medical Supervisor position provides back-up coverage on an as-needed basis, for the Medical Supervisor of the Alexandria Opioid Treatment Program. In this capacity the Medical Supervisor oversees and directs the medical activities of the DCHS Opioid Treatment Program and the Alexandria Residential Treatment Center (ARTC) on an as needed basis approximately two days per month on average and may provide call on weekends. When on duty, the incumbent also provides medical and consultation services to clients in the Center for Adult Services residential group homes; examines and evaluates the physical condition of patients; formulates diagnoses; prescribes treatment and/or referral to other health care professionals and determines an appropriate medication regimen. The incumbent provides supervision to the OTP Nurse Practitioner Supervisor and Pharmacist and consultation to the ARTC RN Staff.What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of medicine, including current developments in the field of addiction medicine; Thorough knowledge of the diagnosis and specialized treatment of substance use disorder, particularly opioid use disorder; Thorough knowledge of pharmacology relevant to patient population (adults with OUD, other SUD and co-occurring mental health disorder; An ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, clients, their families, and with lay and professional groups; Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia; Possession of a certificate of registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration for Schedules II - IV and buprenorphine.
The Opportunity
  • Conducts medical exams and establishes doses/write orders for methadone/buprenorphine for OTP clients;
  • Serves as a member of treatment teams to advise on client treatment plans;
  • Evaluates clients' progress and makes recommendations for changes in medical treatment and/or dosages as required;
  • Signs off on quarterly treatment plans for all methadone/buprenorphine clients;
  • Reviews all OTP client medications for drug interactions on a quarterly basis or as needed;
  • Reviews and signs all take-home requests and reviews drug screen results;
  • Provides medical services for Mill Road clients upon request of clinical staff and client;
  • Acts as consultant regarding client medical problems as needed;
  • Supervises Pharmacist and OTP Nursing Supervisor (who supervises OTP nursing staff);
  • Prepares emergency medications in absence of pharmacy staff;
  • Provides medical consultation to Detox nurse and clinical staff;
  • Provides training on methadone/buprenorphine and TB to all new SDU staff and SA Counselors;
  • Provides training on drugs and withdrawal/detoxification as necessary to SDU staff;
  • Provides education for community groups as needed on addiction and treatment;
  • Prepares and reviews client and program policies as directed;
  • Provides on call coverage when needed to the Opioid Treatment Program and back up to group homes;
  • Performs semi-annual medication reviews on all clients in Assisted Living Facilities;
  • Maintains clinic and pharmacy licensure with Drug Enforcement Agency and the State Board of Pharmacy;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of medicine with a degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD); completion of a one year internship at an approved hospital; current DEA Registrations for Schedules II - IV and for buprenorphine; At least two years of experience in substance abuse treatment; At least two years of experience post internship in general medicine; thorough knowledge of the modern principles and practices of medicine, in diagnosis and current specialized treatment of drug addiction and rehabilitation, psychiatry and pharmacology; considerable experience in responsible medical positions including some experience in the rehabilitation of drug addicts; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; possession of a certificate of registration to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia; Possession of a certificate of registration with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing Opioid replacement treatment; Fluent and Bilingual in both English and Spanish.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to: FBI/Federal Records Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; education/certifications; and driver's license.

Schedule: Weekdays, between the hours of 7:00AM and 12:00PM, as needed. As an essential employee, you may be required to remain at work, and will be required to report to work during a time when the City (due to inclement weather, an emergency or other condition) is unable to be fully operational.
