  • Qualifying experience for the EL/GS-05 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to EL/GS-04 which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position
    OR
    4 years of education above the high school level. (Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements). Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

    Qualifying experience for the EL/GS-06 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to EL/GS-05 which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

    Qualifying experience for the EL/GS-07 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to EL/GS-06 which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

    Examples of specialized experience include the following:

    • Counseled employees on a variety of human resources management options;
    • Processed personnel actions and payments in an automated system.
    • Participated in the planning and execution of agency-wide events
    • Presented human resources information in a group setting
    • Operated one or more administrative programs that required making eligibility determinations for enrollment and/or payments to employees

    The level of knowledge needed is reduced and the supervision needed is increased at the lower levels.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
