Requirements

The Custodian performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe and pleasant physical environment. S/he performs other tasks as assigned in emergency or unusual situations, including snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage, and special event support. The Custodian's work constitutes a direct service of the department to ensure a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work. Reporting directly to one of the Custodial Supervisors, s/he has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Work alone or with others to perform essential or non-essential tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Clean up to 28,000-35,000 square feet of cleanable space per eight hour work day.
  • Use standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade, as well as observance of all safety rules, regulations and precautions.
  • Perform assignments made by the Manager of Custodial Services and/or the Night Operations Manager, including but not limited to, spills and flooding, and assignments made by the Work Management Center, the Director of Facilities Management, the Resource Manager, the Infrastructure Manager and other department managers.
  • Represent the department with the University community and its visitors, behaving in a professional manner and keeping informed of departmental and University rules, regulations and guides pertaining to employment obligations including complying with attendance and clock in and out on time.
  • Work with other University Facilities staff as part of a team, being flexible with scheduling to accommodate emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal.


Qualifications

  • Valid and current driver's license from Maryland, Virginia or District of Columbia.
  • Basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center.
  • Ability to complete a training program in building cleaning.
  • One year of custodial work experience is preferred.
