We are currently seeking a Laboratory Technician to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. The contractor shall: Basic Laboratory and Instrument Maintenance Maintain laboratory and cell culture work area, including safe handling and proper disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste per NIH policies and guidelines. Set-up and empty med/path waste boxes, clean uprecycled materials and shipping boxes. Supply tissue culture flasks, pipette tips, Eppendorf tubes, welled plates, and other consumable plastics - reorder/restock as needed; keep 5, 10 and 25 mL serologic pipette holders filled for use in the tissue culture room and on the laboratory benches; stock personal protective supplies. Operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including freezers, incubators, and centrifuges; clean up ice in freezers, and arrange for instrument service and repair as needed. Check and maintain tissue culture rooms, including clean water bath, and prepare trypan blue and 70% alcohol; check incubator's temperature and CO2 level; maintain, clean, and sterilize incubators. Change benchtop absorbent pads in main laboratory and animal room every as needed. Run eye wash station and record the log; receive and maintain dry ice; turn off microscopes and instruments before leaving the lab. Oversee cleaning and maintenance of lab coats. Preparation of Cell Culture and Biological Reagents Maintain and culture human and mouse cancer cell lines and normal keratinocytes. Prepare frozen cell stocks in LN2 tanks, thaw the frozen stocks, and inventory and record in Excel and FreezerWorks. Maintain and catalog recombinant DNA stocks, including plasmids, siRNA stocks, antibody stocks, and tissue bio-specimens. Prepare and maintain medium and reagent stock solutions, and aliquot and heat inactivate FBS. Prepare and arrange cell line shipping and receiving. Animal Work Prepare and culture mouse and human tumor cells for in vivo tumor implantations. Perform animal work, including monitoring and treatment of tumor-bearing mice, handling mice for injection of tumor cells and drug treatments, intraperitoneal drug injections, subcutaneous saline injections, measurement of tumors, weight checks, tumor harvest, and assessment of health status and euthanasia using cervical dislocation. Work with lab teams to process mouse and human tumor specimens for analysis. Inventory Management and Organizing of Supplies Prepare, order and track laboratory orders for general supplies, cell culture and chemical supplies and research related reagents. Receive, organize, inventory, and maintain general lab supplies, cell culture and chemical supplies, and related reagents. Monitor and order laboratory liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Other Duties Attend laboratory meetings. Provide support for the long-term research program in the Tumor Biology Section. Notify investigators of any general lab issues that are potentially problematic so that changes can be made. REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or a related discipline. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a research laboratory environment. Prior bench laboratory and mouse handling experience. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
