Minimum Education Requirement:

Basic Requirements

1. Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

OR

1. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized Experience:

For the GS-15, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-14 in the Federal service. 

Examples of specialized experience for this position include: utilizing statistical packages to analyze household survey microdata and large administrative record dataset; creating new statistics by combining data collected on surveys or censuses with administrative record data; conducting independent, original economic research in the fields such as health, income, poverty, labor, econometrics, industrial organization, trade or innovation, leading to publications in peer-reviewed academic journals; demonstrating ability to use appropriate econometric techniques in the analysis and interpretation of economic research questions without supervision; providing written analysis to communicate economic findings to a broad variety of audiences; regularly presenting research findings to professional organizations or academic audiences; and leading or guiding others in conducting empirical economic research.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
