  • IT related experience must demonstrate each of the four competencies listed below:

    Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.

    Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

    Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

    Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

    To qualify for the GS-5 Student Trainee (IT Specialist) position you must possess the following:

    A.  Completion of a bachelors degree in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.

    OR

    B.  One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service.  Specialized experience includes, but not limited to, working with clients and customers providing IT support in a help desk setting; assessing customers needs, providing information or assistance, and resolving their problems.

    To qualify for the GS-7 Student Trainee (IT Specialist) position you must possess the following:

    A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience must be IT related. Specialized experience includes, but not limited to: applying basic IT principles and practices; communicating factual and procedural information clearly, providing information or assistance, and gathering and analyzing basic facts and drawing conclusions.

    OR

    B. One full year of graduate level study, or possess a master's or higher degree in a field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement. 

    OR

    C. A combination of experience and education.

    OR

    D. Super Academic Achievement based on undergraduate study

    NOTE: An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

    This is a temporary Pathways Internship Program appointment not-to-exceed 1 year from the date of appointment.

    The anticipated hours are 32 1/2 hours per week. Monday - Friday 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. The incumbent of this position serves as an Intern under the Pathways Program. This program is designed to provide students enrolled at educational institutions at all levels (high school to graduate level) with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore the benefits and conditions of Federal employment. Employment under this authority requires the execution of an Internship Program Participant Agreement that outlines work and academic responsibilities and expectations for the duration of the appointment.

    You must not plan to graduate prior to Spring 2020, May 2020 in order to be considered for this position.


    The agency may non competitively convert a Pathways Intern to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets the following: 1. U.S. Citizenship; 2. Successful Completion of academic course of study, degree, diploma or certificate related to the position; 3. Completion of a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the Internship Program; 4. Meet the OPM Qualification requirements for the position the intern may be converted to; and 5. Maintain acceptable performance.
