Receptionist and Administrative Assistant

The George Mason University English Department seeks applicants for the position of Receptionist and Administrative Assistant. Responsibilities: The incumbent will interact well with students, faculty and the university community, and be able to convey information promptly and accurately. Duties include, but may not be limited to:

  • Handling telephone inquiries and student/visitor requests;
  • Interpreting departmental policies and procedures for students and faculty members;
  • Assisting various program directors with program-related tasks and promotions (course advertising, community outreach, etc.);
  • Updating Web site content;
  • Working on the weekly newsletter;
  • Processing food and beverages orders for department events;
  • Coordinating with visiting writers to arrange for travel and hotel accommodations;
  • Process faculty travel authorizations and reimbursements;
  • Receiving and announcing class cancellations;
  • Sorting and distributing mail; and
  • Ordering and storing office supplies.


Required Qualifications: The successful applicant needs to be an efficient, service-oriented self-starter who can handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent organizational; record-keeping; and communication skills, including clear writing, are required. The position also requires knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; and either knowledge of, or willingness to learn other software programs.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite or comparable software, a creative visual sense, and a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
